by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed defensemen Sami Lepisto to a two-year entry-level contract beginning next season, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Lepisto, 23, was a third-round selection of the Capitals, 66th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He has played the last four years in Finland for Jokerit Helsinki. He skated in 26 regular season games this past year, scoring one goal and dishing out nine assists. In 10 playoff games Lepisto tallied two goals and had four points.

In 2005-06 he was third on the team in points and was fifth among league defensemen in scoring. A 5’11”, 176-pound native of Espoo, Finland, Lepisto also helped lead his native country to a bronze medal at the 2004 World Junior Championship where he scored four goals and added four assists.

The Capitals expect Lepisto to be in attendance at the team’s summer development camp, July 11-14 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va.
