by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
Veteran defenseman led Islanders in ice time and assists in 2007-08

ARLINGTON, Va. – July 1, 2007 –
The Washington Capitals have signed free agent defenseman Tom Poti (POH-tee) to a four-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Poti, 30, is entering his 10th professional season and coming off a 44-point campaign with the New York Islanders. The 6’3”, 210-pound native of Worcester, Mass., has played 594 career games for the Islanders, New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers, compiling 58 goals and 194 assists (252 points). Poti played in the 2003 NHL All-Star Game and was a member of the 1998-99 NHL All-Rookie Team.

Poti had six goals and a career-high 38 assists in 78 games last season, including six goals and 26 assists on the power play. His 32 power-play points ranked 11th among NHL defensemen. He led the Islanders with an average of 25:42 of ice time (11th in the league) and finished 14th in the NHL with 170 blocked shots. Poti was first on the Islanders in assists, eighth in points, sixth in power-play goals and fourth in penalty minutes (74), and added three assists in five playoff games. His 44 points marked his second-best offensive season in the NHL, just shy of the career-high 48 points he had for the Rangers in 2002-03.

Poti has extensive USA Hockey experience as well, having represented the United States in the 2002 Olympic Games (silver medal), the 1997 World Junior Championship (silver medal) and the 1996 World Junior Championship.

Poti made the Edmonton Oilers in 1998-99 after two standout seasons at Boston University, where he was named a first-team all-American and a first-team All-Hockey East selection in 1997-98. He was a member of the 1997 NCAA All-Tournament Team as a freshman.
