by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Sean Collins to a two-year entry-level contract beginning next season, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Collins has signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Hershey Bears, the Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate, for the remainder of this season.

Collins, 23, was an undrafted free agent who played four years at Ohio State in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The Buckeyes’ captain this season, Collins was a second-team All-CCHA selection and was one of three finalists for both the CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman and CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman honors. He was honorable mention all-league in both his sophomore and junior seasons and was named to the league’s all-tournament team in 2005.

A 6’1”, 215-pound native of Troy, Mich., Collins led the Buckeyes in scoring this season from his defense position, posting 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists) in 37 games. Four of his goals came on the power play. He posted 28 goals and 60 assists (88 points) in 157 games during his Ohio State career.

Collins played for Buckeye head coach John Markell, a college teammate of McPhee at Bowling Green.
