ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Nate Schmidt from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Schmidt, 22, scored a goal in Hershey’s season opener against Adirondack (AHL) on Oct. 5. The St. Cloud, Minnesota, native split last season between the University of Minnesota and Hershey. Schmidt registered 32 points (nine goals, 23 assists) in 40 games with the Gophers in 2012-13, and earned four points (one goal, three assists) in eight games with Hershey. Schmidt finished the season ranked tied for third among all NCAA defensemen with 32 points including a career-high nine goals. The 6’0”, 198-pound defenseman also skated in five playoff games for the Bears last season, collecting two assists in five games. Schmidt has registered five points (two goals, three assists) and two penalty minutes in nine career AHL regular-season games.
