Left wing Matt Pettinger and defenseman Nolan Yonkman hosted the Washington Capitals Learn to Skate program at SkateQuest Reston Dec. 4 in Reston, Va. This program is for 5- to 10-year-olds and its main objective is to teach the basics of skating and playing ice hockey.
Pettinger and Yonkman skated with two groups of participants, working on basic hockey skills such as stickhandling, passing, shooting and skating.
“I remember going to these types of events when I was growing up,” said Yonkman. “I see the same kind of excitement and passion in these players that I had as a kid.”
Pettinger and Yonkman also held a Q&A session for each group of skaters and signed autographs for all the participants.
“I had a really good time today, it was a lot of fun to spend time with the kids,” said Pettinger. “It’s just nice to be out here and let everyone know that the Caps are back.”
Since January 2003, SkateQuest Reston has been an official rink partner of the Washington Capitals. The Capitals work with SkateQuest Reston to promote and deliver key programs within its facility, provide player and coach support for its internal programs and initiatives and spotlight the rink in Capitals’ publications. In turn, SkateQuest Reston promotes the Capitals through ice-level dasher boards and banner signage and sells tickets and Capitals merchandise.
