ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals goaltender Justin Peters participated in a KaBOOM! playground Design Day on behalf of Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation at Imagine Lincoln Public Charter School in Temple Hills, Md., on Sept. 24.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment and KaBOOM! are partnering to build a new playspace at the school following an arson incident that destroyed Imagine Lincoln’s playground in July. KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America.

On Design Day, Peters and 40 students started the session by competing in a rock, paper and scissors tournament. After the warm up, the children were given a blank sheet of paper and asked to draw their dream playground.

Peters helped brainstorm ideas and drew several components for some of the children. The students then presented their playground drawings to the group while pointing out their favorite parts. Almost all the kids included swings on their drawings since their old playground didn’t have them. Slides, rock walls and zip lines were also very popular equipment.

Peters signed autographs for the students and answered questions the children had about playing sports while growing up. To end the session, Peters took a group photo with the kids and their designs.

Elements from their drawings will be incorporated into a final design for the new playground to be built on Thursday, Oct. 30. The new playspace will bring nearly 500 students ages five through 12 one step closer to having the playful childhood they deserve by providing them with a safe place to imagine, play and thrive.

The playground will be the second built by KaBOOM! and the three Monumental Sports & Entertainment teams, but the fourth built with the assistance of the Washington Capitals. MSE Foundation will serve as the funding partner for the playground. More than $83,500 was donated to KaBOOM! during the 2013-14 season to help build a MSE-themed playground at Eagle Academy Public Charter School.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation supports the charitable efforts of the professional teams under its umbrella: the Washington Capitals, Mystics and Wizards. MSE is committed to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and focuses on the following five pillars to maximize its impact and engagement with the community: youth basketball and hockey, education and scholarship, pediatric health and fitness, military and veterans' affairs and hunger and homelessness.
