by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals and Inova Blood Donor Services collected 459 total units of blood from 470 Caps fans at their 2009 fall blood drive on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. It marked the most successful blood donation campaign hosted by the Capitals.

Donors received a Mike Green jersey T-shirt, an autographed photo, a Chick-fil-A coupon and were entered into a drawing to win one of nine pairs of suite-level tickets to an upcoming Capitals game.
“The blood drive went really well; Caps fans should be very proud! The donors were happy with the experience and many of them already made appointments for our Capitals spring blood drive,” said Terri Craddock, director of Inova Blood Donor Services. “The Washington Capitals are wonderful advocates for blood donation and we look forward to our continued partnership.”
The Caps will host another Inova blood drive Saturday, March 27, 2010. Check back at for more information and to make an appointment to donate.
One blood donation can save up to three lives, and the 459 units collected could help more than 1,350 local patients. There is an immediate need for most blood types. More than 200 blood and platelet donations are needed every day, year-round, by patients at the 15 hospitals served by Inova Blood Donor Services. Blood and platelets help many people, including trauma patients, surgery patients, newborn babies, cancer patients and transplant patients.
Inova Blood Donor Services collects blood at blood drives and five donor centers in Northern Virginia. To schedule an appointment call 1-866-BLOODSAVES (1-866-256-6372) or visit
