Capitals Finish 2008 NHL Entry Draft With Eight Selections

by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
ARLINGTON, Va. – A day after selecting center Anton Gustafsson and defenseman John Carlson in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, the Washington Capitals selected six more players in rounds two through seven today.

The Capitals held consecutive picks in the second round and took defenseman Eric Mestery 57th and right wing Dmitry Kugryshev 58th. Mestery spent last season with the Tri-City Americans in the WHL, while Kugryshev played in Russia for CSKA-2 Moskva.

Washington traded its third round pick to Philadelphia the day before, but owned the second pick in the fourth round and selected goaltender Braden Holtby 93rd overall. Holtby appeared in 64 of 68 games last year with Saskatoon in the WHL.

The Caps kept their three remaining picks and selected center Joel Broda in the fifth round, left wing Greg Burke in the sixth round and left wing Stefan Della Rovere in the seventh round.

Washington made eight picks this year, which is the first time since 2005 (seven picks) that the team made less than 10 selections.

Fans can get their first glimpse of certain 2008 selections at the upcoming annual development camp from July 7-12 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. The roster is yet to be finalized but some of the newest Capitals are expected to join Capitals first-round draft picks Karl Alzner (2007), Simeon Varlamov (2006) and Sasha Pokulok (2005). Josh Godfrey (a 2007 second-round selection), Michal Neuvirth (a 2006-second round selection), Francois Bouchard (a 2006 second-round selection) and Mathieu Perreault (a 2006 sixth-round selection) will also be in attendance.
