by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
ARLINGTON, Va., – Washington Capitals left wing prospect Stefan Della Rovere has been selected as one of the 22 players who will make up the 2009 Canadian National Junior Team, Hockey Canada announced today. The team will seek Canada’s fifth straight gold medal at the World Junior Championship to be held in Ottawa from Dec. 26, 2008, to Jan. 5, 2009.

Della Rovere, 18, was the Capitals’ seventh-round choice, 204th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently the captain of the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and has recorded 31 points (18g-13a) in 29 games. He leads the Colts in points, goals, power-play goals (eight) and penalty minutes (93).

A seventh-round pick, Della Rovere was the latest NHL draft pick to earn an invitation to Canada’s selection camp. Ten of the 22 selections on the team were first-round NHL draft choices.

The Maple, Ontario, native also participated in the 2008 ADT Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Canada/Russia Challenge, an annual six-game exhibition tournament between all-star teams representing the three leagues of the CHL and a select team of Russian junior players.

Fifteen current Capitals participated in the World Junior Championship, including defenseman Karl Alzner, who was the captain of Team Canada last season.
