Capitals Acquire Defenseman Milan Jurcina from Boston

by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 1, 2007 – The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Milan Jurcina (pronounced MEE-lan YEWR-chee-nah) from the Boston Bruins in exchange for a conditional draft pick, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Jurcina, 23, is in his second NHL season. The 6’4”, 233-pound native of Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia, has played 91 career games for the Bruins, recording eight goals and six assists (14 points), including two goals and an assist in 40 games this season.

Jurcina was an eighth-round selection of the Bruins, 241st overall, in the 2001 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut for Boston last season and recorded 11 points, including back-to-back two-goal games (Jan. 7 and 10). Jurcina represented Slovakia in the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, the 2006 World Championship and two World Junior Championships.

“This acquisition is consistent with what we are trying to accomplish,” said McPhee. “Milan Jurcina is a young guy with some growth potential. We expect that he will help our penalty kill right away and we look forward to seeing how else he can help us in the long term.”
