Less than 48 hours remain until the NHL’s trading deadline, and in 30 NHL cities around North America things are still unusually quiet. A night after a satisfying 5-2 win over the New York Islanders, the Washington Capitals convened for practice at their Piney Orchard practice facility in Odenton, Md.

After practice, we were involved in long conversations with coach Glen Hanlon, captain Jeff Halpern and defenseman Brendan Witt. Hanlon discussed the trade deadline and the play of rookie defenseman Mike Green, among several other topics in a lengthy discussion with Washington-area hockey media. Halpern talked about Green, having Witt as a teammate, and his own situation as an impending free agent. Witt, who is a lead-pipe cinch to be traded between now and Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline, reminisced about his days with Washington and what lies ahead.
