Comcast SportsNet, WDCW and NewsChannel 8 to provide local coverage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – All 82 Washington Capitals games for the 2006-07 season will be televised, the team announced today in conjunction with its broadcast partners.

Comcast SportsNet will air 56 games during the 2006-07 season, while WDCW (formerly WB50) will carry 13 games and NewsChannel 8 will carry 10 games. Every Capitals home game on Comcast SportsNet will be available in high definition. Three Capitals games will be broadcast on national television by NBC and OLN (which will change its name to Versus on Sept. 25).

All of the local broadcasts are produced by Comcast SportsNet. The broadcasts begin with the Capitals’ opening night on Thursday, Oct. 5 against the New York Rangers on Comcast SportsNet (7 p.m.). The Capitals open their season at home on Saturday, Oct. 7 against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Verizon Center, also at 7 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet.

Joe Beninati and former Capital Craig Laughlin return to provide play-by-play and color commentary, respectively, on the local broadcasts, with Al Koken reporting from rinkside. Koken joins former Capital Joe Reekie for Caps Post Game Live following the games on Comcast SportsNet.

“The Capitals are such an up-and-coming team that it is exciting for Comcast SportsNet to be able to provide our viewers with the opportunity to see these enthusiastic and exciting young players make history every evening on the ice,” said Sam Schroeder, executive vice president and general manager of Comcast SportsNet. “Our high-definition product also gives hockey fans a truly unforgettable experience as they can watch plays develop with an extraordinary high-quality picture.”

NBC will televise Washington’s game at Pittsburgh on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3:30 p.m. ET. Versus will broadcast two Capitals games: Dec. 11 vs. Pittsburgh and March 12 at Atlanta.

The Capitals begin their preseason schedule tomorrow night, Sept. 20, with a home game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The regular season kicks off Oct. 5 at the New York Rangers, while the home opener is set for Saturday, Oct. 7, against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
