Alex Ovechkin Named NHL Offensive Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month

Capitals forward wins rookie award for second time Washington, D.C. – February 1, 2006 – Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin was named Offensive Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month for January, the NHL announced today. This marks the second consecutive month for which Ovechkin received the rookie honor and the first time in more than 10 years that a player has won both awards in the same month.
Ovechkin, who ranks tied for seventh in the league with 65 points and tied for second with 34 goals, was named the NHL’s Offensive Player of the Month for January. He had 21 points in 14 games last month (11-10-21) and seven multiple-point games. He tied his previous high eight-game point streak, scoring goals in five consecutive games, including his first career hat trick Jan. 13 at Anaheim in a 3-2 overtime win. His widely acclaimed score, dubbed by many in the media simply as “The Goal,” in a 6-1 win in Phoenix Jan. 16 has been viewed more than 150,000 times on the Washington Capitals’ website.
The 20-year-old Moscow native was also named Rookie of the Month for the second consecutive time. Ovechkin has scored 28% of the Capitals’ goals and earned points on 53% of the team’s goals (21 of 40). He leads all rookie scorers in points (34-31-65) and is first in goals, second in assists, first in power-play points (30), first in shots (246) and second in hits (103). Ovechkin was named to the Russian Olympic team Dec. 22.
Ovechkin is the third player since the inception of the Rookie of the Month Award in 1983-84 to earn top player and rookie honors in the same month, joining Capitals goaltender Jim Carey in March 1995 and Winnipeg Jets right wing Teemu Selanne in January 1993.
