Comcast SportsNet to broadcast 74 games, 33 home games in high definition

ARLINGTON, Va. – September 27, 2007 – The Washington Capitals will have 81 of their 82 regular-season games televised during the 2007-08 season, the team announced today in conjunction with its broadcast partner, Comcast SportsNet. Every Capitals home game broadcast on the network will be in available in high definition.

Comcast SportsNet will broadcast 74 games during the 2007-08 season, on either the network or CSN+. CSN+ is available to fans in the majority of Comcast SportsNet’s viewing area and will help accommodate the network’s extensive fall lineup. The exact channel position for CSN+ will vary by cable provider, but channels are easily located by visiting www.comcastsportsnet.com.

“We are looking forward to the new and exciting ways that Comcast SportsNet is going to present Caps hockey,” said Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis. “We are fortunate to have such a dedicated regional broadcast partner, one that is passionate about our sport, committed to providing the best possible broadcast and willing to explore ways to increase the profile of our great game.”

Comcast SportsNet will open the season with Washington’s first game of the year on Friday, Oct. 5, against the Atlanta Thrashers at 7:30 p.m. The Capitals home opener the following evening will also be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet Saturday, Oct. 6, against the Carolina Hurricanes at Verizon Center at 7 p.m.. These games, and every other game this season, will be complimented by extensive pre- and postgame coverage on the network.

“The Washington Capitals are an exciting young team in our region, and Comcast SportsNet looks forward to once again providing Washington, D.C., fans with a full season of live broadcasts, high-definition programming, expert analysis and the most comprehensive Capitals news in the area,” said Rebecca O’Sullivan-Schulte, senior vice president and general manager of Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. “Viewers can also look forward to a tremendous amount of original Washington Capitals programming on Comcast SportsNet this season beginning with Countdown to Caps Week, premiering Oct. 1.”

Joe Beninati and former Capital Craig Laughlin return to provide play-by-play and color commentary, respectively, on the local broadcasts, with Al Koken reporting rinkside. Former Capital Joe Reekie and Lisa Hillary will also join the broadcasts.

As many as seven Capitals games will be broadcast nationally this season between NBC and Versus. NBC potentially will carry three games: Feb. 10 vs. New York Rangers, March 9 vs. Pittsburgh and March 16 vs. Boston, each in high definition. Versus will broadcast four games nationally: Nov. 26 when Washington hosts Buffalo, Dec. 17 at Detroit, Jan. 21 at Pittsburgh and March 3 vs. Boston.

Three of the 81 televised games, all on the road, have had their starting times changed. The Jan. 5 game at Montreal will now begin at 12:30 p.m., while Washington’s Jan. 21 game at Pittsburgh and the March 5 game at Buffalo each will start at 7:30 p.m. Neither Washington nor Atlanta are permitted to broadcast the Nov. 6 matchup because it coincides with Versus’ exclusive game of the week. That evening Versus is the only outlet permitted to televise an NHL game in the U.S.
