Ashburn, VA – August 7, 2006 – More than 160 local hockey players ages 6-12 found a way to keep cool this summer by participating in the annual Caps Summer Hockey Camps, held at Rockville Ice Arena and Ashburn Ice House. Both camps featured instruction from Washington Capitals alumni players and media personalities Craig Laughlin and Ken Sabourin, who led the campers in power skating sessions, off-ice conditioning, individual skill development, chalk talks and scrimmages.
The Rockville camp, held July 26-30, was highlighted by a special guest appearance from former Capitals player and Maryland native Jeff Halpern, as well as guest alumni Al Iafrate. In Ashburn the following week, campers were treated to visits from Caps players Ben Clymer and Shaone Morrisonn, Caps prospects Luke Lynes and Stephen Werner, and Caps alum Errol Rausse.
Goaltending instruction at each camp was provided by Capitals television personality Joe Beninati, who also addressed the campers about what it’s like working with NHL players on a daily basis. The camps concluded with a final-day festival featuring championship games, awards ceremonies, pizza parties and appearances by Capitals mascot Slapshot and Caps Caravan.
