Welcome to the blog, my name is Derek Jory and I'll be your word slinger throughout the 2011 Young Stars Tournament. I'll use this space to keep you up-to-date like no one else on crucial must-know information from Penticton, BC, such as: how sandy the beach is, if the Ogopogo has a moustache or not and how my fantasy football team (The Brady Punch) is coming together. Oh, and some stuff about hockey too - if there's time.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if any Nigerian kings need my help to access a large sum of money in a foreign bank account, money that we would then split 50/50, email me. I'll also be live-tweeting every Vancouver Canucks Young Stars game via @CanucksGame, where zany is served up, free of charge, 140 characters at a time.
Let's do this.
9:15 a.m. -- Gooooood morning! I don't know about you, but September 12th is definitely one of my favourite days of the year - it's my birthday! The old man turns 28 this year, here come the gray hairs. Although I'm in Penticton, please send all gifts to Rogers Arena ;).
9:38 a.m. -- A few Canucks are on the ice for morning skate, 10 players and two goalies to be exact. Your guess is as good as mine as to what tonight's line-up will look like when Vancouver faces off against Calgary at 4 p.m..
11:09 a.m. -- Back at the hotel and my advanced age just convinced me it was a good idea to try and iron my dress shirt for today. I have a steam burn on my arm and I almost lost a toe. And my shirt is wrinkly as a crumpled piece of paper in the back, but the front is stylin'!
1:21 p.m. -- Leave it to Canucks cameraman Rory McGarry to find a killer burger place for lunch. Burger 55 has the best veggie burger in town so far...
2:50 p.m. -- What does my pre-game routine entail? Well, today I watched the series finale of Entourage before eating a cupcake that my wicked co-workers bought me for my birthday. All you kids out there dreaming of one day being a journalist take note, it's hard work.
2:57 p.m. -- The fire alarm is going off in the South Okanagan Events Centre, I can not confirm nor deny that it's because the Flames entered the building.
3:26 p.m. -- Forgot to tell you I ran into TSN's Bob McKenzie (friend of Canucks.com) this afternoon. This even just got realer.
3:40 p.m. -- Time for some honesty: although I'll be providing thorough coverage of the Canucks/Flames game, I'll also be checking in on the early Monday Night Football game between New England and Miami. I have a birthday wish, one that involves the number of fantasy points my QB Tom Brady will get me. I won't say the exact amount because then it won't come true, but he needs to have an average to above-average Brady game. Fingers crossed please.
4:07 p.m. -- Puck has dropped for Canucks and Flames, follow @CanucksGame for the latest.
4:20 p.m. -- I can't tell you what it is, but my favourite song ever in the world just played during a stoppage in play. It's a song I never put on and I always know the last time I heard it because it is played so sparingly. Last time I heard it was last January during the all-star break while I was at Brock University watching my brother and sister play hockey. Good story, I know. You're welcome.
6:00 p.m. -- It's a 2-2 game between the Canucks and Flames at the start of the third; Vancouver has held two leads but Calgary keeps clawing back. On another note, while I like Tom Brady's yardage and touchdown pass, that last interception was bad. And it ended his NFL record streak of consecutive passes without an interception ends at 358. Time to start a new streak.
6:35 p.m. -- Canucks score late in 3rd and early in overtime to beat the Flames 4-3 in overtime. More to follow...
6:36 p.m. -- THANK YOU TOM BRADY!
7:55 p.m. -- Nathan Longpre is a man of his word. Read all about it in The Goods.
8:01 p.m. -- Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a slice. I'm now off for a "quiet" evening to enjoy the last few ours of my 28th birthday. Until tomorrow!
