Welcome to the blog, my name is Derek Jory and I'll be your word slinger throughout the 2011 Young Stars Tournament. I'll use this space to keep you up-to-date like no one else on crucial must-know information from Penticton, BC, such as: how sandy the beach is, if the Ogopogo has a moustache or not and how my fantasy football team (The Brady Punch) is coming together. Oh, and some stuff about hockey too - if there's time.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if any Nigerian kings need my help to access a large sum of money in a foreign bank account, money that we would then split 50/50, email me. I'll also be live-tweeting every Vancouver Canucks Young Stars game via @CanucksGame, where zany is served up, free of charge, 140 characters at a time.
Let's do this.
9:30 a.m. -- Gooood morning, happy game day to you! If I'm this excited to finally see some Canucks play a meaningful game, I know you're excited. Add in that it's the first NFL Sunday of the year and things are coming up Milhouse today. The prospects have their game day skate at 10:45 a.m., I should have a better idea at who's in and who's out of tonight's line-up then. Game time is 7:30 with Vancouver facing off against the Edmonton Oilers and 2011 first overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
10:30 a.m. -- I love going from the intense heat outside to the frigid cold of the rink. My body is confused to say the least. I'm here though and the prospects are on the ice, 23 to be exact. Two minutes ago I counted 30 guys. Why won't they just stand still?
11:03 a.m. -- Some interesting line combos this morning: Jensen/Archibald/Friesen; Rai/Curtis/Lessard; Longpre/Grenier/Anthony; Schroeder/Sweatt/Rodin.
11:18 a.m. -- The Canucks are really putting in a good morning skate, I'm tired just watching.
7:09 p.m. -- Wow, I just got up to the press box to prepare for the Canucks and Oilers and realized that everything I blogged all afternoon didn't save. The hamster must not have been running on his wheel today so the internet at the hotel didn't work. My apologies.
7:13 p.m. -- The good news about not having my afternoon blogged is that I don't remember writing anything Stephen King worthy. The Canucks.com crew and I grabbed a bite to eat and watched some NFL post-practice before my dad and his fiance came down from Kelowna for a visit. I like wineries.
7:21 p.m. -- Tonight's starting goalies are David Honzik for the Canucks and Olivier Roy for the Oilers.
7:28 p.m. -- Nearly time to finally drop the puck. I'll update the blog sporadically throughout the game, but if you want intense coverage, follow @CanucksGame on the ol' Twitter machine.
8:15 p.m. -- It's 1-1 after 20 minutes of play in what has been an exciting game so far. It wasn't as sloppy as I expected. Darren Archibald scored for the Canucks off a beautiful set-up from Nicklas Jensen.
9:05 p.m. -- That was a painful period for Vancouver as Edmonton scored six goals to take a 7-1 lead. The win is nice, but this week is about development so let's start fresh in the third, cool?
9:52 p.m. --Just caught a press box reporter reading this blog. Do you think the game is THAT boring, or the blog is THAT good? (Please don't answer that).
11:00 p.m. --Well, that wasn't pretty - final score: 7-2 Edmonton. It was a learning experience for the Canucks though, according to coach Craig MacTavish. You can read alllll about it in my post-game story, which I will publish shortly.
