Welcome to the blog, my name is Derek Jory and I'll be your word slinger throughout the 2011 Young Stars Tournament. I'll use this space to keep you up-to-date like no one else on crucial must-know information from Penticton, BC, such as: how sandy the beach is, if the Ogopogo has a moustache or not and how my fantasy football team (The Brady Punch) is coming together. Oh, and some stuff about hockey too - if there's time.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if any Nigerian kings need my help to access a large sum of money in a foreign bank account, money that we would then split 50/50, email me. I'll also be live-tweeting every Vancouver Canucks Young Stars game via @CanucksGame, where zany is served up, free of charge, 140 characters at a time.
Let's do this.
8:30 a.m. -- Wow, you know you're getting old when sleeping in until 8:30 results in the best night of sleep ever. I'd probably still be sleeping if Frankie Corrado didn't wake me up with a tweet to send out, that kid sure is eager! As promised I've got a photo gallery coming, it'll be the only Vinnick gallery of the week so really enjoy it.
9:00 a.m. -- I just remembered I wanted to wish the Canucks Sports & Entertainment dragonboat team good luck today on the waters. They have two races today and if all goes well, a few tomorrow.
11:45 a.m. -- The internet at the hotel and I began fighting when I had one photo left to upload into the gallery, so I took off for the rink. That was at 11. A Farmer's Market and three stops to ask for directions later and I've arrived at the South Okanagan Events Centre; it took me 35 minutes longer to get here than it should have. My middle name should be Lost.
12:00 p.m. -- Yann Sauve was the first prospect on the ice for Vancouver's 12 p.m. practice, which began at 12 p.m. sharp. Coach MacTavish runs a tight ship.
12:24 p.m. -- Hallelujah, the Behind the Lens gallery is up!
12:33 p.m. -- Practice just kicked up about 200 notches aas the players scrimmage 4-on-4; no goals yet as Brendan Jensen and Karel St. Laurent (both free agents) hold their own, but Antoine Roussel just delivered a nice clean hit on Anton Rodin.
1:35 p.m. -- When I pitched the idea of writing this live-blog, I really thought it would be more riveting. Meh, at least you're reading it! (Thanks mom) Anywho, the prospects are now back on the ice after a quick twirl of the Zamboni and today's skate will end with a 5-on-5 scrimmage.
2:00 p.m. -- The Canucks are off the ice and they look bushed. The coaches appear to be in mid-season form, however.
2:15 p.m. -- Did Djokovic actually just come back to beat my boy Federer?
2:44 p.m. -- I think I know how NHLers in media-thin markets feel. There were a total of three reporters in the dressing room post-practice, including myself. It was awesome. No pushing or shoving or name-calling, just one-on-one interviews at their best. I've got a good lil' article in the works. Hopefully you're out enjoying the weather and not holding your breath for it, I need some time to put this puppy together. And I'm hungry again - surprise, surprise.
7:11 p.m. -- No, I didn't forget about you, I was working. And eating. And working. And eating. Despite a lack of oven mitts, I came up with 5 Burning Questions surrounding the Canucks for this week. You can read it, or not, just know that I wrote it in my hotel room despite gorgeous 33 degree weather and a magestically beautiful lake calling my name. And I did it for you, my people. (How was that for a guilt trip? (Just read it!)
7:28 p.m. -- This may or may not be my last update of the day, it allllll depends on if I opt for sleep to be refreshed for game-day tomorrow, or...actually, I'll take the or. Until tomorrow!
