Young Stars Live-Blog: Day 1

by Derek Jory / Vancouver Canucks

Welcome to the blog, my name is Derek Jory and I'll be your word slinger throughout the 2011 Young Stars Tournament. I'll use this space to keep you up-to-date like no one else on crucial must-know information from Penticton, BC, such as: how sandy the beach is, if the Ogopogo has a moustache or not and how my fantasy football team (The Brady Punch) is coming together. Oh, and some stuff about hockey too - if there's time.

If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if any Nigerian kings need my help to access a large sum of money in a foreign bank account, money that we would then split 50/50, email me. I'll also be live-tweeting every Vancouver Canucks Young Stars game via @CanucksGame, where zany is served up, free of charge, 140 characters at a time.

Let's do this.

6:30 a.m. -- Nothing like waking up to a human alarm clock! My 16-month old son Denver was up before the sun had even thought about rising and although I coaxed him back to sleep for a while, by 6:30 he was ready to roll. So I am too, I guess.

6:45 a.m. -- Some housekeeping: every Young Stars game will be boardcast live on and two Canucks games (and four games overall) will air on Sportsnet; will feature a player blog, another player will be tweeting from @VanCanucks and a third will be taking part in a live Facebook chat (LIKE the Canucks official page for upcoming details); also @CanucksGame will be live-tweeting every Vancouver game, and post-game be sure to visit for exclusive photos, stories and videos. Is that everything? Oh, right, tickets...somehow tickets are still available to this insanely good event. Do yourself a favour and snap some up, you'll thank yourself later on.

7:57 a.m. -- Prospects testing gets going in mere minutes with Group 1 up first to, well, get tested I guess. Our new web intern Travis (nicknames being accepted) and I will be covering the good times, maybe we'll even write about it later on. NOTE: It will likely just be Travis covering it, I'm hungry...

8:45 a.m. -- Group 1 just finished, Group 2 is now up. It's intense in the Canucks gym, crazy excercizes going on everywhere. First off, these guys look like Ken dolls they are so ripped. I watched them go through testing while eating a donut. If these guys are this cut and they are still sweating during these tests, that's saying something about something. And yes, I'd love another donut.

9:39 a.m. -- Players are trickling into the Captain's Room at Rogers Arena for media availability. Kevin Connauton, or K-Conn as he's known on the streets, was up first. He said he's confident and comfortable with his game, despite not being called up by Vancouver last season. Connauton played the most games (73) of any Canucks defenceman heading to Penticton.

9:54 a.m. -- Jordan Schroeder, come on down! Vancouver's first round pick from 2009 said he now realizes what it takes to be a pro and that he "worked his bag off all summer" to get in the best possible shape to impress at Young Stars and ultimately impress in Canucks main camp. Watch out for No. 48.

10:30 a.m. -- Just got an email asking why the prospects are doing media in the Captain's Room and not the media room and, drum roll please, it's because Ke$ha (which I found out today is pronounced K-E-dollar sign-HA) is taking over Rogers Arena for a show tonight as part of her Get Sleazy Tour. LMFAO is opening.

11:43 a.m. -- Testing is over, so is the media session, so players are grabbing some lunch and packing up for the bus ride to Penticton. I had a bite to eat and watched a few minutes of a Rugby World Cup match. Both Yann Sauve and I stared at the TV with the same blank look, like when a dog tilts its head to the side in confusion. Rugby and I don't understand each other.

1:00 p.m. -- Time to hit the road. It's about a four hour drive to Penticton, so I'll check in after my upcoming four hour nap.

6:10 p.m. -- The Canucks have invaded Penticton. We have arrived after a fairly swift bus ride, one that I spent watching Limitless, napping and getting to know Rob Rosmis, strength and conditioning coach for the Chicago Wolves. It was a pretty quiet ride, not much to report or than that Frankie Corrado hopped on my iPhone and sent his first tweet from @VanCanucks. In case you haven't figured it out, he'll be our guest tweeter all week.

6:45 p.m. -- So it turns out the new web intern Travis can put pen to paper, or fingers to a keyboard I guess I should say. Here's his inaugural Canucks Report, it's a breakdown of prospects testing and some insight into new Wolves head coach Craig MacTavish and Vancouver young gun Nichlas Jensen.

7:15 p.m. -- The players have a team dinner tonight and since my invite must have been lost in the mail, I'm heading out for a run and then some food with the crew.

11:45 p.m. -- Good night all. The sandman got to me early so the photo gallery will have to wait until the a.m.
