World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend is Coming to Vancouver

October 12-13, 2013

For the third consecutive year, Hockey Canada and the IIHF have teamed up to promote women’s ice hockey with World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend.

Women’s ice hockey has been one of the fastest growing sports in the last 25 years. This weekend (October 12-13, 2013), many countries around the world will participate in events to celebrate the sport’s growth as part of World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend. Nationwide, Hockey Canada has teamed up with the International Ice Hockey Federation for the 3rd consecutive year to celebrate the game of women’s hockey and provide opportunities for girls to join grassroots hockey programs. Festivities will range from Female “Try It” events, to skills competitions and referee clinics with over 1,300 females participating in BC alone.

This year, the World Girls’ Hockey Weekend Longest Game will be introduced in Canada on Saturday, October 12. Female minor hockey players at the Atom, Peewee, Midget and Bantam levels will play in a total of 44 games across the country, starting at 7:00am in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, to 4:00pm in Parksville, BC.

In the Lower Mainland specifically, the Richmond Oval will be taking part in the Longest Game, hosting a Bantam contest at 3:00pm. Meanwhile, the Killarney Arena in Vancouver will be holding numerous free events throughout the day. From 8:30am – 9:45am, the Vancouver Angels will hold a skills competition where girls will compete against each other in accuracy, speed and shooting contests. “Come Try Ice Hockey” will invite newcomers to the sport from 10am – 11:15am. Skates, helmets and a stick will be provided during this cosom hockey session. Lastly, from 11:30am – 12:45am, the Vancouver Angels, from Tyke to Midget, will be playing in a series of short ice hockey games!

Whether you are an experienced hockey player, a passionate beginner, an enthused parent or simply want to improve your skills or try hockey, the World Girls’ Hockey Weekend will offer an opportunity for everyone to get involved and support the great Canadian female game!
