Hughes' record-breaking season

With one pass to J.T. Miller Thursday night in Ottawa, Quinn Hughes re-wrote Canucks record books.

The 20-year-old defenceman, who leads NHL rookies in points with 51 points and sits fourth overall in the league in scoring for defencemen, picked up his 43rd assist giving him the record for single season assists by a rookie, moving him past Dale Tallon's 42 in 1970-71.

Hughes' 51st point of the year also tied him with Jocelyn Guevremont for the second most single season points by a Canucks rookie defenceman; Guevremont had 51 in 1971-72. Tallon holds the Canucks record for points by a rookie defenceman with 56 points in the 1970-71 season.
The Hughes assist came on the power play, which also set another Canucks franchise record for most powerplay points in a season by a rookie, with 24. Brock Boeser previously set the record of 23 during the 2017-18 season.

No NHL defenceman has as many points as Hughes since the All-Star break (17), he's the first rookie d-man with 50 points in the last 27 years and the first Canucks defenceman to eclipse 50 points since Christian Ehrhoff in 2010-11. With 19 games to play this season, Hughes is now on pace to break Doug Lidster's Canucks franchise record for points by a defenceman, which stands at 63 from the 1986-87 season.
Hughes is the 16th rookie defenseman in NHL history to record 50 points in a season and is now 17 helpers away from setting the all-time league mark of 60, set by Larry Murphy in the 1980-81 season. Murphy also holds the record for most points by a rookie defenceman in NHL history with 76.
If Hughes continues his incredible play, his next record will be most points by a rookie defenceman in Canucks history, which currently sits at 56 points from the 1970-71 season.
