Canucks 2020 NHL Draft preview

We are less than a week away from the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
Normally, the event is a big show with all the hockey world descending upon an NHL city for a week full of transactions. As with many things this year, it will be a little different this time around.
Each NHL team will have a draft war room in their respective city with limited members of the staff there to complete the draft, make any trades, or any other move that will happen.
Here in Vancouver, the hockey operations staff will convene at the team's offices with the hopes of building off a successful 2019-20 season.
A lot has happened this season and everything is a little different in the hockey world. So, with that in mind, here is a run down of the selections that the organization possesses for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

1st round pick

The Canucks do not have a 2020 1st round pick as it was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning to acquire J.T. Miller. The pick was later moved to the New Jersey Devils in a deal that saw Blake Coleman head to the Lightning.
The trade was completed at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft with the condition that the pick would be moved had the Canucks made the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the team advancing past the Minnesota Wild in the play-in round, the trade was completed.
The selection ended up being the 20th overall pick.
But let's not overlook Miller's play in his first season with the Canucks.

2nd round pick

There will also be no selection in the 2nd round for the Canucks as it was moved to the Los Angeles Kings prior to the trading deadline.
The full deal saw the Canucks part with prospect Tyler Madden, forward Tim Schaller, and this selection to acquire winger Tyler Toffoli.
Toffoli appeared in 10 regular season games, scoring six goals, and adding four assists, and then played in seven post-season games that saw him pot two goals and two assists.
The Kings will pick 51st overall with this selection.
Again, Toffoli was as advertised coming to the Canucks.

3rd round pick

At present, the Canucks first selection will be at 82nd overall with their third-round pick.
With so many selections prior to when the Canucks make their pick, it can be hard to nail down who will be available and who the organization covets. But here are some of the players that could be there.
American defenceman Wyatt Kaiser is ranked 81st by TSN's Bob Mckenzie
and would be an intriguing add to the prospect pool. He appeared in 11 USHL games and then played the rest of the season in US High School hockey. Kaiser is a fluid puck-moving defenceman and will head to the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2021-22.
Another name that could be called is winger Carter Savoie,
who is ranked 84th on Bob Mckenzie's list
. Savoie is a sniper through and through. He waits in the weeds for the right opportunity. He will head to the University of Denver.

4th round pick

The next pick for the Canucks will be in the fourth round with the 113th overall selection.

WHL forward Tristen Robins is a rugged winger who has a nose for the net. Although he has that grit to his game, it should not take away from his skilled game. Also, in the WHL is Finnish defenceman Christoffer Sedoff. His point totals, 5-14-19 in 61 games, will not jump off the page but he possesses an intriguing two-way game.
Other players ranked in that range by Future Considerations are: Brandon Coe (OHL), Cross Hanas (WHL) and Brett Berard (USHL).

5th, 6th and 7th round picks

The Canucks have their own 5th and 6th round selections and then possess the Anaheim Ducks 7th round pick. Those picks are 144th, 175th, and 191st respectively.
At this point in their draft, organizations will look for players with long term potential. That rings true with the Canucks in the last few drafts as they have gone the college or European route with their picks and the returns look promising - Adam Gaudette was a 5th round selection. While prospects Aiden McDonough, Toni Utunen and Arvid Costmar continue upwards trajectories since being selected.
It is impossible to predict who the Canucks will select at this point, but there will almost certainly be some intriguing names added to the prospect pool here.

The first round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft will begin at 4PM PT on Tuesday Oct 6th and rounds 2-7 will begin at 8:30AM on Wednesday Oct 7th. All of the action will be broadcast on Sportsnet.
