Van acquires Matthias & Markstrom from Fla

Gillis announced today that the Canucks have acquired goaltender Jacob Markstrom and centre Shawn Matthias from the Florida Panthers in exchange for goaltender Roberto Luongo and left wing Steven Anthony.
Shawn Matthias
Matthias, 26, has collected 16 points (9-7-16) and 73 hits in 59 games with the Panthers this season. He has compiled 97 points (48-49-97) in 312 career games, all with the Panthers. The 6’4”, 216 pound centre was originally selected by the Detroit Red Wings 47th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
A native of Mississauga, ON, Matthias has represented Team Canada on two occasions. He registered four points (3-1-4) in seven games en route to a gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships after making his international debut at the 2006 U18 IIHF World Championships.

Jacob Markstrom
Markstrom, 24, has compiled a record of 1-6-3 with Florida this season. In 43 NHL games, all with the Panthers, the 6’6”, 196 pound goaltender has built a record of 11-25-5 with a 3.21 goals against average. The Gavle, SWE, native was originally selected by Florida 31st overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Prior to joining the Panthers, Markstrom played in the Swedish Elite League for Brynas where he led the league in save percentage (.927) and goals against average (2.01) in the 2009.10 season.
On the international stage, Markstrom most recently helped Sweden win gold at the 2013 World Championships, posting a 1.58 goals against average and .934 save percentage in five games played. Previously, he played for Sweden in the 2010 World Championships (bronze), 2010 World Junior Championships (bronze), 2009 World Junior Championships (silver) and 2008 U18 IIHF World Championships. In 2009, he was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament after finishing the tournament with a 1.61 goals against average and .943 save percentage.
Luongo, 34, leaves the Canucks as the all-time leader in shutouts (38), wins (252), most wins in a single season (47) and trailed only Kirk McLean in games played with 448 in a Canucks uniform. Off the ice, Luongo’s legacy includes his PSA work with Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Lui’s Crease Club, an executive suite Luongo supported from 2008.09-2012.13 and provided at no-cost to children’s charities for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a hockey game.
Anthony, 22, has recorded 14 points (4-10-14) in 33 games with the St. Charles Chill of the CHL this season. The Halifax, NS, native was originally selected by Vancouver 187th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
