What's up world! The live blog is now live and I'm also listening to Live, so things are really heating up.
Derek Jory here, I'm once again reporting from Canucks Headquarters, Rogers Arena, in the sixth annual Live Trade Blog. Much like Vancouver's 6-5 shootout win from Sunday night, we are in for ups, downs and gifs - tons of gifs. I've got a folder bubbling over with gifs for whatever the occasion.
One ground rule: I will be reporting rumours as they surface from qualified sources, which includes the paper frog puppet my son made me; all rumours will appear in italics to keep things running smoothly. All confirmed Canucks deals will be bolded.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if you just want to say hey there, hi there, hello there, leave a comment below. I'd love to hear from you.
Let's do this.
MONDAY, MARCH 2, 2015
6:00 a.m. (PST) -- You expected the blog to be up and running already? Give your head a shake!
7:00 a.m. (PST) -- I'm here, in pajamas, but I'm here.
8:00 a.m. (PST) -- An early transaction to report as Frank Corrado has been reassigned to the Utica Comets. I see this move as a player being sent down to the farm team.
8:05 a.m. (PST) -- Are we having fun yet? Any predictions Canucks fans?
8:23 a.m. (PST) -- LIVE STREAM ALERT! Canucks GM Jim Benning will hold a live press conference later today, while a live TSN 1040/Canucks stream will take place at 3 p.m. PST. Stay tuned for linkage.
8:58 a.m. (PST) -- Just stopped by the Canucks war room and I can report the following: they have a delightful platter of fresh fruit. That's about it. The mood was light, no tension detected and look at president Trevor Linden's smile. He's having fun.
9:19 a.m. (PST) -- The Canucks practice this morning at 10 a.m., but Alex Burrows, Kevin Bieksa and Brad Richardson are all on the ice already. Getting those guys back will be like making huge trades. Love it.
9:50 a.m. (PST) -- I have relocated to the stands at Rogers Arena, seat 102, row 15 of section 117, to be exact. No one else is anywhere to be seen. Early bird gets the worm? Where is it??
10:00 a.m. (PST) -- Vancouver is one the ice and that includes defenceman Alex Edler.
10:01 a.m. (PST) -- Seems Zack Kassian is in good spirits this morning:
10:18 a.m. (PST) -- And now, a live look-in at the Canucks media covering practice. Sitting, waiting, wishing... (I'm the green dude)
10:30 a.m. (PST) -- In-sight from Iain MacIntyre:
10:30 a.m. (PST) -- How do you feel about the Canucks standing pat? If this is how the day plays out, will you be happy?
11:30 a.m. (PST) -- CONFIRMED TRADE: Canucks acquire Cory Conacher in exchange for Dustin Jeffrey.
Conacher, 25, has played 15 games with the New York Islanders this season, recording three points (1-2-3) and 14 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 28 games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, collecting 22 points (5-17-22) and 30 minutes. The Burlington, ON native has appeared in 141 career NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, and New York Islanders collecting 58 points (19-39-58) and 84 penalty minutes.
11:31 a.m. (PST) -- What does Conacher offer the Canucks? Take a look:
11:32 a.m. (PST) -- Just did a deep dive into Conacher’s Twitter account (@conhockey19) and my creeping concluded the following: he’s a Derek Jeter fan, loves street hockey, is a golfer and fisherman, has an adorable dog, has met Garth Brooks and he spent the afternoon of Saturday June14th at the gluten free convention in Mississauga.
12:00 p.m. (PST) -- The 2015 Trade Deadline is officially over BUT this is when most the trades trickle in. I can confirm I have nothing to confirm. Except that there's food for the media this year, which has made the media very happy.
12:10 p.m. (PST) -- What does an NHL trade call sound like? Find out.
12:15 p.m. (PST) -- Is there more news to come? Yes, yes there is, according to this:
1:27 p.m. (PST) -- CONFIRMED TRADE: Canucks acquire Sven Baertschi from Calgary Flames.
Baertschi, 22, has played 15 games with the Calgary Flames this season, recording four assists (0-4-4) and six penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 36 games with the Adirondack Flames, collecting 25 points (8-17-25) and six penalty minutes. The Bern, Switzerland native has appeared in 66 career NHL games with the Calgary Flames collecting 28 points (8-20-28) and 22 penalty minutes.
1:28 p.m. (PST) -- Who is Sven Baertschi and why is his last name so amazing/difficult to spell? Take a look:
1:29 p.m. (PST) -- Twitter creep complete. First off, it’s an unofficial account (@SvenBaertschi), so we can’t confirm this is him, although it looks to be. Sven appreciates birthday wishes, enjoys visiting the Great Alberta Children's Hospital, took part in the Flames Fur Babies Fair in 2013, went to Cirque du Soleil in 2012 and he once re-tweeted a friend who is excited to see Jurassic Park in 3D, which means we can assume he was also excited, which means he likes dinosaurs, which means we’re going to get a long great.
1:30 p.m. (PST) -- Do we call him Sveny or Baertschi or Barts?
