Good morning! Welcome to the blog, my name is Derek Jory, you may remember me from such live blogs as the 2012 Trade Deadline Live Blog. Good times. Last year I reported all the wheeling and dealing from a secret bunker in Phoenix, Arizona, but this year I'm holding down the fort at Canucks Headquarters, Rogers Arena. It's from my own comfortable swivel chair (I call her Black Betty) that you'll find out about deals the Vancouver Canucks make; so you know, this is the only source of trade deadline information available anywhere, don't even bother looking elsewhere.
One ground rule: I will be reporting rumours as they surface from qualified sources, which includes my three-year-old son Denver and his friend Cole; all rumours will appear in italics to keep things running smoothly. All confirmed Canucks deals will be bolded.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if any Nigerian kings need my help to access a large sum of money in a foreign bank account, money that we would then split 50/50, leave a comment below or email me.
Let's do this.
5:00 a.m. (PST) -- Start to live blog at 5 a.m. they said, fans will definitely be up reading it they said. Thanks for getting up early, mom, but nothing to report yet - wait, wait, this just in: all of the Vancouver Canucks are still in bed and one, who shall remain nameless, is in a Scooby-Doo onesie.
5:01 a.m. -- Still no deals to report. That was an intense minute of waiting.
5:02 a.m. -- Ugh, nothing now either. Let's focus on what we do know: the Canucks landed Derek Roy yesterday in exchange for Kevin Connauton and a draft pick in 2013. I salute this trade, an organization can never have enough Dereks, especially ones who spell their name D-E-R-E-K, none of that Derrick stuff. Thanks to some stealth research by our web intern Colin, here are a few things we think we think about Roy: he drives an awesome 599 Ferrari, he built his parents their own master bedroom at his summer home, he rocked a great mullet with the Rochester Americans and is dominant at NHL ’94 for Super Nintendo. What's not to love about the new guy?
5:38 a.m. -- They call it Trade Deadline Day, but really, it's Decision Day. Across the NHL general managers and their teams are making tough decisions to try and improve their teams for either the present or the future. I do not envy these decision makers as I'm sure they do not envy me - I just had to make the tough call between 12 grain or whole wheat bread and whether to use butter or its peanut cousin as a topping. There's sure to be a lot of criticism coming my way, but I opted for 12 grain with peanut butter, I'm a bit of a wild card that way.
5:45 a.m. -- I don't even think any GMs are awake yet, none of them are returning my texts. So, we'll keep the filler talk going. What will be your toughest decision today?
6:00 a.m. -- ONLY six hours remaining until the trade deadline deadline. Keep that seat belt on.
6:35 a.m. -- A quick recap of all the action so far: Trades: 0 Players: 0 Picks: 0. You're welcome.
6:57 a.m. -- Blast from the past: Just got an email from Canucks reporter Joey Kenward, who said that last year, while the Canucks made two deadline deals, one-third of the NHL didn't do a thing. The teams who didn't make deals included CGY, CAR, DAL, FLA, LAK, NJD, NYI, PHI, PHX, PIT, STL and WSH. Now you know.
7:32 a.m. -- Look who finally rolled out of bed (or wherever a cactus sleeps), it's Claus Von Prickles! He was so stellar helping me cover all the deadline madness last year that he's been invited back. Man, the good times just keep on rolling.
8:05 a.m. -- I'm still here, hopefully you're still there. No deals of any sort from any teams as of yet. Thank goodness I only have words to fill, not hours of TV. Bets on how long until the panels start discussing the season premiere of Game of Thrones?
8:12 a.m. -- First sighting of the day: Canucks coach Alain Vigneault just walked passed my office. He's in a track suit jacket, jeans and was carrying a coffee - possibly because he was up late discussing trades and things with important people from important places?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
8:30 a.m. -- Good question, wmackey55, but no, I haven't heard anything about Ott. The TSN panel just went in depth about the Canucks, but Roberto Luongo's name was the only one thrown around, mainly heading to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
8:46 a.m. -- No action in the trade world, but we're up to 17 comments on the blog. It's interesting to read where everyone is following from, my hat is off to marikoarielle for her last comment: I've been on my phone all class refreshing your blog every 5 mins. I had my teacher threaten to take my phone away, but I yelled "you can't! I'm reading DJ's Trade Deadline Live Blog!" Not only do I get to keep my phone, she wants me to update her as well. Now THAT'S dedication.
9:14 a.m. -- Here's a tip for any future Canucks reporters out there: drink a lot of water on Deadline Day. The walk to the washroom goes past the Canucks War Room, where Mike Gillis and company are working the phones and doing their thing. The more times you walk past en route to the salle de bain, the more chances you have to see something juicy. I'm such a sleuth - sorry, sloth is what I meant.
9:29 a.m. -- I'm loving the chatter below with all the comments. Not only are there students following from class, but a teacher as well. Classic. Big question from DerekNotRoy just came through and yes, Mr. DerekNotRoy, I would have stuck with 12 grain and peanut butter even if the breakfast spread had been more smorgasbordish this morning. I have now moved on to some oatmeal, which I put chocolate chips in to have dessert for breakfast. Try it.
9:35 a.m. -- Derek Roy is in the building. WATCH
9:49 a.m. -- taylor22_33_712 asks: DJ, are you reporting on all trades and rumours or just ones involving the nucks? Just the Canucks was the plan because I was worried about being overwhelmed by alllllllll the trade action. Silly thinking apparently. The only deals so far are Rob Flick to the Boston Bruins with Maxime Sauve headed to the Chicago Blackhawks, and the San Jose Sharks landed Scott Hannan from the Nashville Predators for a conditional 6th round pick in 2013. Dizzying.
10:00 a.m. -- Two hours remain on Trade Deadline Day - "Nooooo, it's almost over, I'm so sad!" said no one ever.
10:17 a.m. -- An exclusive look inside the Canucks War Room below, including a niiiice KeslerBomb.
10:37 a.m. -- Jussi scoop: Jussi Jokinen to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a conditional draft pick to the Carolina Hurricanes. That's the fourth trade of the day. I have goosebumps, you?
10:45 a.m. -- FRUIT PLATE ALERT! Today just got real. I've relocated to the media room and there are two fruit plates. Heaven. There are also new photos on the wall - it looks swanky in herrrrrr.
10:57 a.m. -- The Canucks, including Roberto Luongo, are on the ice for practice. Random thoughts: Derek Roy looks good in Vancouver colours, Chris Higgins' beard is growing a beard and there are twice as many media at practice than usual annnnd that fruit plate was delicious *UPDATE* - Roy, #15, is skating with Higgins and Hansen.
11:11 a.m. -- Roy just led the team stretch, must be part of the initiation process. The only Canucks not on the ice right now are Raymond, Weise, Ballard and Kesler, although Weise skated earlier and I just saw Kesler in the hallway. Don't read anything into Raymond not being on the ice, he's still injured, as is Ballard.
11:15 a.m. -- My view for today's practice ---------> Yes, I call this work.
11:24 a.m. -- Tweet from @DarrenDreger: The Canucks are involved in at least 4 trade discussions ranging from Luongo potential to depth players. Now waiting. #tradecentre
11:25 a.m. -- And another from @DarrenDreger: Doesn't sound like there's been any progress made between Leafs and Canucks on Luongo as the clock ticks. #tradecentre.
11:35 a.m. -- Pfffffffff, how rude! RT @hosea24hours The Canucks have not dealt Derek Jory yet, although we're all hoping they get a better popcorn machine in return.
11:44 a.m. -- I'm headed into the dressing room to talk to Roy. Back in a jiffy.
12:26 p.m. -- And we're back. Roberto Luongo remains a member of the Vancouver Canucks and he's at the podium 10 feet from me right now talking to the media. He was called off the ice 10 minutes before practice ended and said this was just as a precaution.
12:28 p.m. -- "I'm proud to be a Vancouver Canuck, I love it here and I love my teammates."
12:32 p.m. -- "I would like nothing better than to win a Stanley Cup here and whether that's as a starter or backup, I'm giving myself 100 per cent to that."
12:39 p.m. -- That's the end of Luongo's scrum. Coach Alain Vigneault is up next and with Trade Deadline having passed 39 minutes ago, it looks as though the Canucks have not made any moves - BUT some could still trickle down.
1:15 p.m. -- My apologies, I lost my internet connection before Mike Gillis took to the podium. I'm now back in my office turning around a Derek Roy feature, seeing as how he is the only player the Canucks acquired this year. Good news is he's a solid addition and when the injuries subside, the Canucks will be as dangerous as ever - with the NHL's best one-two punch between the pipes.
1:22 p.m. -- I guess that's it for me. It's been a long day of nothing and I appreciate you coming along for the ride. Thanks for all the comments, they made up for the lack of trades! Until next year, Derek.
