Good morning! Welcome to the blog, my name is Derek Jory, you may remember me from such live blogs as the 2011 Young Stars Tournament and 2011 Canucks training camp. Good times. Today I'm coming to you live from a secret hotel in Phoenix, Arizona, bringing you the latest and greatest from NHL Trade Deadline 2012. Come back to this page early and often as we are the only source of trade deadline information available today #haha.
Just one ground rule: I will be reporting rumours as they surface from qualified sources, which does include my uncle Clarence; all rumours will appear in italics to keep things running smoothly. All confirmed Canucks deals will be bolded.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if any Nigerian kings need my help to access a large sum of money in a foreign bank account, money that we would then split 50/50, leave a comment below or email me.
Let's do this.
7:48 a.m. (MT) -- I've got to say, you look great first thing in the morning. The live blog is now up and running and although I don't expect much to go down early on, this will be the last place to find out about trades. Good luck keeping up with me TSN!
8:25 a.m. -- We are on the move. The Canucks are at different hotel than Mike Gillis and company, so we are going to set up shop at their hotel. Back in a flash, maybe even with trade news?!?
9:17 a.m. -- The bird has landed. Sorry, that's code for the fact that myself, Joey Kenward and cameraman Rory McGarry are now at management's hotel. It's swanky.
9:30 a.m. -- Only one trade this morning so far, Andrei Kostitsyn to the Nashville Predators for a 2nd round pick (2013) and conditional 5th round pick (2013) to the Canadiens.
9:33 a.m. -- Please let me introduce you to Claus Von Prickles, he'll be assisting me today. He's local.
9:49 a.m. -- We can see the real Canucks war room from our room. Management pops out for fresh air every once and a while. I'll let you know if I hear any loud cheering.
10:14 a.m. -- John Garrett just did a standup with Joey Kenward and I find his comments very revealing. He said the Canucks are in a position of power and aren't scrambling for anything right now. If they do something, Garrett believes it'll be for depth and similar to years past, they won't give up roster players and mess with team chemistry to get it. He did mention Cory Schneider is Vancouver's biggest bargaining chip.
10:25 a.m. -- Rory just went into the actual Canucks war room to shoot some footage. All I can tell you is that there is a football being tossed around. I am told the football is not on the trade market.
10:39 a.m. -- Rumour has it...rumour has it…
10:40 a.m. -- Sorry, I'm listening to Adele.
10:55 a.m. -- Things are heating up. A package of peanut butter M&M's has been opened in the fake Canucks war room.
10:58 a.m. -- Trade to announce: Joey Kenward and I have exchanged M&M's for Smarties. As you can see from the photo to the right, I have been duped.
11:03 a.m. -- Tweet from TSN's Farhan Lalji: Despite all the options, #canucks still in the mix with Dallas. #TradeCentre
11:14 a.m. -- Two trades in the last few minutes: Mike Commodore is now a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a conditional 7th round pick (2013); Nick Schultz has been dealt to Edmonton from Minnesota for Tom Gilbert.
11:31 a.m. -- We just saw GM Mike Gillis walk by outside. He was on the phone. He is in shorts. Only on trade deadline day is this news.
11:38 a.m. -- Sportsnet footage just showed Mason Raymond, Byron Bitz and Alex Burrows playing basketball prior to practice today. Nice to see the boys so relaxed on such a brutal day for them. I can't even imagine what it's like.
11:45 a.m. -- Keith Aulie and Carter Ashton has swapped teams, Aulie to Tampa, Ashton to Toronto. I know Aulie, amazing guy, watch this touching video and you'll become a fan.
11:56 a.m. -- Sportsnet is reporting the Canucks have acquired Samuel Pahlsson. This is not official.
12:07 p.m. -- I repeat, this is not official, but numerous sources are reporting the Pahlsson deal with many, such as TSN's Bob McKenzie, saying it was in exchange for two draft picks.
12:09 p.m. -- Here’s what I’ve unearthed on Samuel Pahlsson: the 34-year-old Swede played with Daniel and Henrik Sedin for Modo Hockey in Sweden; he was drafted 176th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft and was traded to the Boston Bruins in 2000, that same season he was dealt to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, since then he’s played for the Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets; in 718 career games, the 6-foot, 212-pound centreman has 64 goals and 118 assists for 182 points; he won a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2006-07 and was nominated for the Selke Trophy that same season; here’s how you officially pronounce Samuel Pahlsson.
12:29 p.m. -- The Pahlsson deal is still not official. And ESPN's Pierre LeBrun just tweeted the following: Vancouver and Nashville among contenders still trying to do more in final minutes.
12:47 p.m. -- Rumour to shutdown: Claus Von Pickles is not dating Alyonka Larionov. They're just friends.
1:00 p.m. -- And that's that. The trade deadline is over. Deals will still trickle down, so don't go anywhere.
1:06 p.m. -- According to TSN's Farhan Lalji's latest tweet: #canucks aren't done yet. Have trade calls pending.
1:15 p.m. -- TSN is reporting the Canucks have made another trade. Stay tuned.
1:16 p.m. -- I should have eaten something this morning.
1:30 p.m. -- Brad Zeimer, sitting a table to my right, just tweeted the following: Here in Scottsdale it's looking a lot like #Canucks have made another deal. I have no idea what he's talking about. Neither does Claus Von Pickles.
1:40 p.m. -- Tweet from Bob McKenzie: Big deal brewing. Hearing BUF's Zack Kassian is going to VAN. UPDATE: New tweet from McKenzie: Cody Hodgson is a Buffalo Sabre.
1:40 p.m. -- Again, none of this is official, but Sportsnet is also reporting that trade.
1:41 p.m. -- The Buffalo Sabres just tweeted the following: Sabres trade Zack Kassian to Vancouver for Cody Hodgson; ALSO - M-A Gragnani to Vancouver for Alexander Sulzer.
1:49 p.m. -- Sorry still nothing official to report, I have to wait until press releases come out from the Canucks, if in fact moves were made.
1:55 p.m. -- It’s official: Andrew Gordon has been traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Sebastian Erixon, who goes to the Anaheim Ducks.
2:00 p.m. -- Ben Kuzma just came over to get the proper spelling for Sebastian Erixon and he knocked over Claus Von Pickles in the process. Heads will roll.
2:04 p.m. -- It’s official: Samuel Pahlsson has been traded from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defenceman Taylor Ellington and two 2012 fourth round draft selections.
2:05 p.m. -- Pahlsson was on the phone with Sportsnet and here’s what he had to say on coming to Vancouver: “I’m going to do everything I can to help the team win. It’s been a couple years since I was in the playoffs, but I’m know I can give everything I’ve got.” In terms of what he can bring to the table to help put the Canucks over the edge, Pahlsson was vague, but knows he can contribute: “It’s hard to say, but they’ve been through it now, they’ve been all the way to the finals and Game 7 there, so they have a lot of experience, but they haven’t won it. I can’t really say what I’m going to do, but I hope I can help somehow.”
2:24 p.m. -- I repeat, the Hodgson deal is not official, despite everyone under the sun reporting it. When it's official, you'll hear it here first.
2:43 p.m. -- Still nothing to report. I can see Gillis, Vigneault and the crew, but have to wait until media relations says we can interview them. I'll see if Claus Von Prickles can help.
3:04 p.m. -- Just waiting for Gillis to speak now. I haven't eaten since 8 a.m., not sure I'll have the strength to muster up any questions. Time to step up, Claus Von Prickles.
3:06 p.m. -- It’s official: Zack Kassian and Marc-André Gragnani have been sent to Vancouver Canucks from the Buffalo Sabres for Cody Hodgson and Alex Sulzer.
3:07 p.m. -- Kassian, a 21-year-old from Kingsville, Ontario, is a big boy, he’s 6-foot-4, 230-pounds, and the 13th overall pick from the 2009 NHL draft is jacked to be coming to Vancouver. “I’m very excited to be part of a Stanley Cup contender, but at the same time there’s a lot of nerves and expectations. I’m very excited and I just can’t wait to get to work. Kassian knows there is a lot of work to be done: “As a young player you have to work your way up and I think I was doing that in Buffalo. When there’s a lot of injuries I was playing a lot more than I was lately, but as a young player you have to earn it and that’s what I’m going to do in Vancouver. I know they have a deep line-up, that’s no secret, and they have a top team and have a good chance to go all the way. Like I said, I just want to work hard in practice and earn my spot.”
3:16 p.m. -- Mike Gillis just confirmed he hopes all players acquired will be joining the team in Phoenix and that Byron Bitz has been reassigned to the Chicago Wolves.
3:19 p.m. -- That was a very interesting talk with Gillis. We are on our way back to our hotel (TO EAT!!!), but we'll have it up on Canucks.com asap.
3:52 p.m. -- I'm back at the hotel. That was a weird day. Nothing...nothing...nothing...then the biggest trade of the day. Hope you enjoyed following along, Claus Von Prickles and I certainly enjoyed having you.
