He’s 5’9” and 215 lbs., shoots left and practically grew up at his local hockey rink. Now, the only thing standing between 35-year-old sawmill worker Darwin Head of Prince Albert, SK, and a cool million dollars is scoring 15 goals in 24 seconds, as he was named this year’s participant in TSN’s second annual, international award-winning million-dollar giveaway, the Chevrolet Malibu Million Dollar Shootout. As part of the contest, Head will also have the chance to win up to four totally new Chevrolet Malibu Hybrids – the 2008 North American Car of the Year – for himself and his friends.
The contest will air live nationally on TSN and TSN HD on February 27 during the first intermission of the game broadcast featuring Colorado @ Vancouver, which begins at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT).
Head, a sawyer at Carrier Forest Products Ltd. in Prince Albert, was randomly chosen from 8.6 million total online entries, far surpassing any previous contest or promotional campaign on TSN.
"I grew up watching and playing hockey. I have so many heroes who played the game, I just hope I can score like them when it's all on the line," said Head. "This is all so exciting. I've had a few sleepless nights since I learned I'd be shooting for the million."
During the first intermission, Head and two friends – avid hockey player and cousin Lance Badger, and die-hard Canucks fan Randy Bout – will head to centre ice, where they will each have 15 seconds to shoot 10 pucks at an open net (30 pucks in total). Depending on the number of total goals scored as a group, prizes will be awarded as follows:
•5 goals – Head wins a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid
•10 goals – Head, Badger and Bout win a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid
•15 goals – Head, Badger, Bout and one in-arena fan attending the game at General Motors Place all win a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, for a total of four cars given away
Immediately following the group shots at centre ice, Head will move back to the far blue line where he will have 24 seconds to shoot 20 pucks into an open net. If Head scores 15 or more goals within the allotted time, he will win $1 million in a one-time payout.
One day prior to the shootout, Head, Badger and Bout will hone their wrist shots in a special one-hour practice session with Hall of Fame defenceman and Chevrolet Hockey Ambassador Bobby Orr at General Motors Place on February 26 at 4:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. PT).
A lifetime Saskatchewanian, Head grew up on the Mistawasis First Nation reserve, located approximately 45 minutes west of Prince Albert. He started playing hockey at age 10 and continued playing recreationally until he was 25 years old. Head, who entered the Chevy Silverado Million Dollar Shootout last year, lives in Prince Albert with his wife Criste and their three children.
TSN and Chevrolet are supporting the Chevrolet Malibu Million Dollar Shootout with a multi-platform promotional strategy, featuring 30-second promotional spots airing on TSN and TSN HD, along with a targeted PR/marketing campaign, online creative and in-game mentions during all hockey broadcasts on TSN. Last year’s inaugural Chevy Silverado Million Dollar Shootout promotion won a hat trick of accolades: a PROMAX North American Gold for Consumer Promotion, a Media Innovation Certificate and an international Diamond Award for Best Event Marketing Campaign.
In December 2006, 29-year old registered nurse Jason Hall of London, ON, guaranteed himself a happy New Year when he walked away with five brand-new 2007 Next Generation Chevy Silverado trucks for himself and four lucky hockey fans, as part of TSN’s first Chevy Silverado Million Dollar Shootout. Hall also had the chance to shoot for $1 million, but was just one goal short of the required 15 to win the grand prize of $1 million. About General Motors
