Two Canadian Gold Medalists Coach Minor Girl Hockey Players at the Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest in Vancouver
This past September, Canucks Sports & Entertainment (CSE) announced a new partnership with Scotiabank, the Official Bank of the Vancouver Canucks. With a focus on supporting fans, community initiatives and grassroots hockey, the partnership has given rise to many programs – the latest of which being Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest.
For several years, Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest has been an annual staple in many hockey cities across Canada. This year, the free hockey clinic came to Vancouver for the first time, giving over 300 female hockey players throughout the province the opportunity to participate in on and off-ice training led by some of the best in their sport.
On November 10, 2013, female hockey players from Novice, Atom, Peewee and Bantam age groups got the opportunity to improve on their on and off-ice skills with coaching from some of the best in female hockey. Three time Olympic gold medalist Cherie Piper and two time Olympic gold medalist Vicky Sunohara teamed up to coach these young female hockey players in on ice hockey skills sessions. The talented local girls hockey team, the Pacific Steelers helped lead the sessions along with former members of the Canadian National Hockey team.
Participants were addressed by the Olympians on the importance of being part of a team, hard work, dedication and determination that helped them reach their goals both on and off the ice. In addition, the girls got the chance to take their photo with the biggest trophy in Canadian Women's hockey, the Clarkson Cup.
The event was not based solely on hockey however. Alex Mitchell, Director of Community Partnerships for the Vancouver Canucks, spoke about the importance of making a difference in the community. With this focus on community invovement the girls had the opportunity to create holiday cards for patients in BC Children’s Hospital. The event demonstated the importance of working together as a team whether you are playing sports or helping others within your community.
