Ride for Hope

by Staff Writer / Vancouver Canucks

On the road again.

The Canucks Alumni were on the road once again. On October 6th, the crew made their way down to Langley Twin Rinks to help raise funds for the ‘Ride for Hope’ campaign. Adult Safe Hockey League (ASHL) players donated funds to help raise money and play with some of their past Canuck heroes. On the ice was the likes of Jeff Bandura , first round Mike Brown , first ever NHL draft pick Garry ”Mondo” Monahan and one game, one time backup goalie Chris Levesque in the pipes along with a number of other past Canucks. On the bench was one time captain Chris Oddliefson vs. Alumni manager and coordinator Rod Brathwaite.

The game was a hard fought battle with team Oddliefson taking the lead early and convincingly, however after a few strategic line changes and some line matching by Brathwaite, the blue team fought there way back to bring the game to a tie after a big save from Chris “Levy” Levesque in the dying seconds of the game. This brought the good old fashioned barn burner into overtime and is when the old dog began teaching the young buck a few new tricks. As overtime started, old dawg Oddliefson put three hard nose Canucks on the ice while Brathwaite was hoping to weather the storm and catch Oddliefson on the second shift. There was no second shift. Before you knew it, the puck ended up in the Blue teams end, bounced off Bandura’s pants, and right on to Moe Lemay’s stick. No chance, game over.

Of course the game had its highs and lows of usual Alumni antics, while pizza, wings, and beverages were enjoyed by all after the game including Dorpee (Wayne Van Dorp) who made sure to leave some for the guests.

A special thank you goes out to Tyler Chambers, Robin Trainor, Bill Elliott, Sam Hicks, Jason Daem, and Cory Van Santen. These players all paid large sums to guarantee their spot on the ASHL Roster for the game. We would also like to thank the other players who made donations to the ‘Ride for Hope’ charity and all of the other players and Alumni (Slammer, Oddie, Stan, & Rick) who came out on that Saturday night to help raise money for a great cause. We could not have done it without your continued support!

The Canucks Alumni and Jeff Bandura would also like to thank Mark Greenhalgh (Alliance Principle Ingredients) who helped bring the Alumni out, Brooke Sherwood and Heather Meadmore (Canlan Ice Sports) who donated ice time, Misty, Adam, Kylie, and Jay (Canlan Ice Sports) for helping with the execution of game day duties, and John McKerracher (Canlan Ice Sports) for making the game happen on the ice without incident.
