Reid Report: Day 5

by Kristin Reid / Vancouver Canucks

It’s the midway point of my trip, but the team is less than a third of the way there. After a day off Sunday, the team had a lengthy practice at the Bell Centre. They skated hard for over an hour today.

Sami Salo looked good and skated the entire practice. He is expected to play tomorrow.

Mike Gillis said they’ll carry seven defensemen for the time being, just to get through the next few games. I asked him about Willie Mitchell and he said Mitchell had a better day yesterday and should be back working out in the next few days.

Roberto Luongo was practicing with all new gear for the second straight time. He is breaking in the gear he plans on wearing in the Olympics. He said he’d like to get a few games in with the new gear before the Olympics begin.

After practice, Alain Vigneault spent a few mintues alone with Steve Bernier. It was definitely a two-way conversation, but Bernier wasn’t smiling by the time it was over.

The lines at practice:

55 5
6 23
29 34
15 44

Tanner Glass was skating as a defenseman with Nolan Baumgartner. Expect both of them to sit Tuesday night against the Habs.

I asked some of the players today about the Calgary-Toronto deal. Their reaction is in the Reid Report (see what I did there?). None of the players would admit they weren’t sad to see Dion Phaneuf go to the Eastern Conference. As much as they won’t miss his head hunting, they seemed to enjoy the challenge of going up against a player like him.
