FINLAND TOPS BELARUS 5-1
Finland leads Belarus 2-0 after the first off goals from Olli Jokinen and Niklas Hagman.
The Fins dominated in shots 17-2, but the pesky Belarusians (?) really put up a fight in a spirited opening 20 minutes.
Sami Salo skated alongside Kimmo Timonen and in 9:01 of ice time, slammin’ Sami had two shots on goal. Timonen had one.
Shots were again heavily in favour of Finland in the second, 11-2. Belarus did manage to get on the board though as Sergei Demagin found Sergei Kostitsyn at the side of the net just 21 seconds into the frame to cut the Finnish lead to 2-1.
The white and blue restored its two-goal lead late in the period with Hagman picked up his second of the game. The former Torontonian, who was dealt to Calgary a few weeks ago, slide a backhander past Belarus’ Vitali Koval from his knees with 3:08 remaining before the middle recess.
Salo’s ice time was down a tad at 7:46, but he was a plus-1. Salo also spent time in the box taking a seat for hooking.
I haven’t spotted any Salo jerseys in the crowd yet, there are a few Canucks sweaters to be seen though. There’s also a wacky fan dressed in a kangaroo costume with boxing gloves on. The cops dragged the fan out of the lower bowl, probably to treat him to lunch.
The Finns put this game away 23 seconds into the third with Valtteri Filppula of the Detroit Red Wings scoring; Finland’s lead then ballooned to 5-1 thanks to a Jarkko Ruutu score late in the period.
Salo picked up his third and fourth shots of the game in the period, an open look at Koval from the right point, that hit the keeper dead in the crest and a blast that clanked off the crossbar.
Two Canucks skaters have now taken to the ice through four games with none having picked up points. Three Vancouver players are on deck in game 2, so that streak is sure to end.
CANUCKS.COM SCOOP: A red woman was just spotted in the upper deck. By red woman I don't mean someone in some Canada red, she was head to toe in a red body suit, just like our friends Force & Sully, the green men from Canucks games. Impressive.
