Drafted by Vancouver in the first round, 26th overall, Schneider, 22, made his NHL debut, posting a record of 2-4-1.
Schneider returns to the Moose to pick up where he left off, a 10-1-0 record that earned him AHL Goaltender of the Month for November 2008. Before he boarded a plane bound for Manitoba, we got to know one of the Canucks top prospects a little better. Meet the man behind the mask, go offside with Cory Schneider
. What is the story behind your number?
Well I actually wore #1 for a while, all through college and when I came here last year Drew McIntyre [former Moose goalie] had it. And then obviously Roberto Luongo
had it so I had to wait my turn. So, I went with #35, because Mike Richter wore that and he was my favourite goalie growing up. What is your favourite non-hockey sports team?
Boston Red Sox. Editor's note: this loyal Massachusetts native didn't hesitate when answering this question. Schneider grew up in Salem and attended Boston College. The Boston campus is a coin toss away from Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. What is the best sign you’ve ever seen at a game?
I saw some pretty good ones in college, some of those crowds were pretty crazy. One school had a white board where they’d rewrite messages every period, so I saw some good ones there, but I don’t remember exactly what they were. What song would you sing on American Idol?
Probably something fun, maybe ‘Like a Prayer’ by Madonna, that’d be a good one, right? Get the crowd into it, I think that’d be a good one. What’s your New Year’s Resolution?
Stop more pucks. Pretty easy, right? I don’t usually make News Year’s Resolutions, I try to keep everything in moderation. Who has the best nickname on the team?
I’d have to say ‘Eagle’ for Eddy, Alex Edler, or ‘Juice’ for Bieksa. What do you miss most about your hometown?
Probably being on the ocean, being right there on the water. Kind of like here, but it’s a little different back home, a little more quiet, more relaxing out there. If you weren’t playing hockey, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be doing something in the business world, I don’t know exactly what. I was getting my degree in finance, so I have to finish that up, but I’ve always enjoyed numbers and the stock market, so hopefully something around there. Do you have any pre-game rituals?
More a routine than a ritual. I kind of go through the same stretches and warm ups and things. I don’t know if it’s a superstition, but whatever works for me. What is your favourite movie quote?
Uh.. too many to think of. Pretty much anything from ‘Dumb and Dumber’ I guess will work for me. What was the worst job you ever had?
Probably coaching goalie lessons. I did that in high school. It’s fun at first, but then when you’re on your skates for about six hours around these nine year olds. Kids aren’t the most responsive so it’s gets a little old after a while. Who on the team would win on Survivor?
Probably Willie Mitchell. He’s good at being a politician and kind of working all the angles and cutting deals, so I think he’d last a long time.
