Live to Give - Phoenix Academy of Learning Society

by Staff Writer / Vancouver Canucks

PALS was conceived by a group of parents of children with autism and complex developmental disabilities. PALS was incorporated on August 25, 2006 as a non-profit independent school under the Society Act of British Columbia and is a registered charity.

What do they do?

The mission of PALS is to provide individualized educational programs for children/adolescents with complex developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). PALS will use the most effective, scientifically validated instruction to maximize the development of each student’s communication and language, social, academic and life/independence skills.

The philosophy is that every child is unique, every child is valued and every child can learn and be the best that they can be. PALS believe that effective and efficient teaching and behavior management, provided by skilled individuals, will enable each student to achieve to the fullest extent of his/her individual abilities.

What made you select them?

After watching a presentation on the Canucks Autism Network (CAN), I wanted to see firsthand how teachers communicate and interact with autistic children.

What was the best part – the highlight of your day?

The highlight of my day was helping a child with his math homework and seeing the delight and elation on his face when he got an answer right.

What did you learn today about giving back?

Giving back helps you realize the importance of community and how even the smallest of contributions can make a lasting impact.

Why is it important for you to give back personally and as an employee of Canucks Sports & Entertainment?

It’s important to give back personally because it allows me to put life into perspective and forget all about the little worries and stresses that in the whole scheme of things are unimportant and insignificant.

It’s also important for me to give back as an employee of CS&E because the company is a recognized leader in the community and by volunteering I am contributing to the Canucks’ greater effort to connect with and makes the lives of people a little easier, everyday.
