What do they do?
Dress for Success Vancouver dedicates it resources to helping prepare low or no income women transition (back) into the workforce by providing professional attire for interviews, online workforce tutorials and mentoring.
Former clients who have successfully returned to the workforce become members who meet monthly for a networking and education program. Monthly meetings focus on subjects such as the written and unwritten rules of the workplace, personal finance, communications and personal health.
What made you select them?
I had volunteered with the organization in the inaugural year of Canucks Sports & Entertainment’s “Live 2 Give” day and wanted to see how Dress Success had progressed over a short period of time. It was amazing to see how they had grown and continue to give self confidence to women who have endured varying degrees of personal turmoil. It’s an organization that not only gives a useful product but also gives ongoing tools to help foster growth within an individual.
What was the best part – the highlight of your day?
We were given the opportunity to watch a video and hear from one of the individuals that works at Dress for Success. Hearing the personal stories of those that were helped through the charity was very inspiring and set the tone for the day.
What did you learn today about giving back?
A single day of volunteerism can have an impact. Even if you have a very busy schedule, one day on an annual basis can help out a charitable organization that truly needs an extra hand. The impact of a single day of help could have a positive life-long impact on someone.
Why is it important for you to give back personally and as an employee of Canucks Sports & Entertainment?
It’s very easy to get caught up in your “own world” between work and a number of other personal responsibilities. By volunteering, it gives the opportunity to gain a greater sense of understanding and perspective of what fellow members of my community go through. Everyone will have ups and downs in their life and it’s comforting to know that complete strangers are willing to help one another out to help make someone’s life, who is going through a tough situation, a little easier.
