Goaltending the focus at this year’s Coaching Day in BC – By Sonya Hall
On December 13th the Vancouver Canucks, in partnership with BC Hockey and Hockey Canada, welcomed over 250 minor hockey coaches from around the lower mainland to Rogers Arena for Coaching Day in BC, presented by Tim Hortons. Coaching Day is a free annual event which provides minor hockey coaches with the opportunity to watch on-ice demos, hear from qualified guest speakers and learn from the Vancouver Canucks coaching staff along with coaching experts in the grassroots hockey community. Participants were provided with a comprehensive Coaching Day manual, which includes valuable resources on player development, drills, and coaching strategies for all age levels.
Sports broadcasting veteran Craig MacEwan was on hand as emcee; taking questions from the coaches, and delighting participants with exciting prize giveaways, courtesy of Hockey Canada, Tim Hortons, and the Vancouver Canucks.
This year’s Coaching Day focused on goaltending. On-ice demos were led by goaltending expert Pasco Valana, co-founder of Elite Goalies, and Craig Sherbaty of BC Hockey, with the help of the New Westminster Royals Atom A1, and Peewee C3 teams.
The event also featured a presentation by Veronica Sander and Felicia Martin from Future Goals, an NHL program aimed at engaging students in the real-world application of key science, technology, engineering and math skills. In the second half of the event, the coaches had the chance to hear from Vancouver Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins, and to watch the Canucks game-day practice with Assistant Coach Perry Pearn, followed by a few words from New York Rangers Assistant Coach Darryl Williams to wrap up the event.
