The Wolves lost 3-2 in double overtime Friday night to the San Antonio Rampage in the decisive Game 5 of the Western Conference Quarter-Final.
The Wolves trailed 2-0 in the third period before Brad Hunt cut into the lead, and veteran Darren Haydar scored with just over a minute to go, to send the game to overtime. Rampage defenseman Roman Derlyuk scored the winning goal for the Rampage, 5:28 into the second overtime.
Wolves forward Stefan Schneider had the best chance to open the scoring in the first period, ringing a shot off the post, but the two teams failed to put the puck in the net with the Rampage outshooting the Wolves 11-5 in the frame.
Seven minutes into the second period Eddie Lack was penalized for playing the puck outside the trapezoid and the Rampage would make him pay on the ensuing power play as Evan Barlow was able to beat Lack through the five-hole to open the scoring. The Wolves would pour it on offensively after the goal on their way to outshooting the Rampage 15-6 in the middle stanza, but Rampage goaltender Jacob Markstrom came up with some timely saves, the biggest on a Michael Davies breakaway to keep the Rampage up 1-0 after 40 minutes.
With 12 minutes to go in the third period Mark Cullen scored his first of the post-season to make it 2-0 Rampage. Hunt would cut the lead in half with nine minutes to play in the period, the first professional playoff goal for the rookie defenseman. With 68 seconds left to go in the period, Haydar completed the comeback when he found the back of the net, evening the score 2-2 and sending the game to overtime.
Lack made some big saves in the first overtime period; he had six saves in total. The Wolves best chance came on a Haydar and Mark Mancari 2-on-1 late in the frame, but the two veterans failed to capitalize on the opportunity, sending the game to a second overtime.
After killing off a Taylor Matson high-sticking penalty in the second overtime, the Wolves could not gain the momentum they needed, and Derlyuk took a pass from Jon Matsumoto and beat Lack to send the Rampage to the Western Conference Semi-Final, ending the Wolves season.
