If this was the regular season, we would probably be saying the Utica Comets stole a point on Sunday night.
But this is playoff hockey. There are no points, just wins and losses, and on this night it was the Manchester Monarchs that came away with a 3-2 overtime win to take Game 1 of the best-of-seven AHL Calder Cup Final.
Despite being outshot 37-17 on the night, including 12-3 in the middle frame, the Comets can thank the man between the barber poles for giving them a shot to win, as Jacob Markstrom finished the night with 35 saves.
Sven Baertschi and Cory Conacher had the goals for the Comets, who will look to rebound in Game 2 and steal home-ice away with the next three games scheduled for Utica.
Game 2 goes Sunday afternoon. Puck drop is at 2pm PT.

Game 1: Monarchs 3 – Comets 2 (OT)
- Just 1:01 after the Monarchs opened the scoring, Sven Baertschi took a beauty feed from Alexandre Grenier and buried his seventh of the post-season.
- Shortly after the Monarchs took the lead again, this time early in the third period, Cory Conacher snapped home his fifth goal of the playoffs, giving him four tallies in his last five games.
- Baertschi left the game with an injury in the middle stanza and did not return. His status for Game 2 is unknown at this time.
- Overtime has not been kind to the Comets, who have dropped four of their last five extra session games and are 3-4 overall.
