Ending 2013 on a sour note.

Despite 67 saves in two games from Joe Cannata, the Utica Comets (10-16-1-2) will skate into 2014 after suffering a pair of one-goal losses this past week.

Friday, December 27, 2013: Binghamton Senators 4 – Utica Comets 3

-Alexandre Grenier scored twice and added an assist, but a late power play goal from the Senators proved costly for the Comets as they snapped their four-game home winning streak.

-Darren Archibald scored his fourth of the season and also had a second period scrap against Senators defenseman Michael Sdao.

-Joe Cannata stopped 30 of the 34 shots he faced, including 14 in the middle stanza.

-Pascal Pelletier led the assist department for the Comets with two, while Alex Biega, Patrick Mullen and Cal O’Reilly all chipped in with one helper.

-Pelletier, Brandon DeFazio and Nicklas Jensen all had a team-high four shots on goal.

-Archibald, Biega and Grenier all finished plus-2.

-Kellan Lain was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct towards the end of the second period.

-This was the third sellout of the season for the Comets and their first since November 23rd.

Saturday, December 28, 2013: Hamilton Bulldogs 4 – Utica Comets 3 (Shootout)

-Henrik Tommernes scored his fourth goal of the season in his first game back from injury with 1:04 remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime, but the Comets fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Bulldogs on Saturday.

-Darren Archibald had a goal and a fight for the second straight game. The Newmarket, Ontario product leads the Comets with six fights so far this season.

-Alexandre Grenier tallied his ninth goal of the season to open the scoring for the Comets.

-Joe Cannata made 37 saves in goal, including all 16 shots he faced in the first period.

-Tommernes, who also had an assist in the game, finished with a team-high six shots on goal.

-Kellan Lain was the lone Comets skater to finish with a positive plus/minus, finishing at plus-1.

-Nicklas Jensen scored a beauty in the shootout, while Grenier was also able to find the back of the net as the Comets went 2-for-6 overall.

-The 37 saves by Cannata was a season-high for the Wakefield, Massachusetts product and three off his career high of 40 which he set last season as a member of the Chicago Wolves.

-This was the ninth straight home game the Comets have produced a power-play goal.

-With an attendance of 3815, this marked the first time the Comets have had back-to-back sellout crowds this season.

Comet of the Week

For the fourth time this season, Alexandre Grenier takes the nod as the Comet of the Week after posting four points (3-1-4) in two games this past week. The Canucks third round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft also found the back of the net in the shootout against the Bulldogs on Saturday night. Grenier scored twice, added an assist and was plus-2 on Friday night, before finding the back of the net again on Saturday. The Laval, Quebec product now has 19 points (9-10-19) in 29 games this season to go along with 25 penalty-minutes, a plus-1 rating and 67 shots on goal.

Coming Up…

The Comets have a New Year’s Day afternoon clash against the Lake Erie Monsters (15-12-0-3) and then close out their eight-game home stand on Friday night when they host the Rochester Americans (13-11-3-3). On Saturday, the Comets travel to Toronto to take on the Marlies (16-10-2-1).
