On Sunday, February 21st the Vancouver Canucks and BC Hockey held the annual event, Coaching Day in BC. Hosted at Rogers Arena and presented by Tim Horton’s, Coaching Day in BC is a free event offered to all coaches from minor hockey leagues in British Columbia. The event recognizes the important contribution coaches make to hockey programs throughout the province and provides the tools needed to succeed as a coach.
Participants of this event were offered on and off ice seminars that included special guest speakers from the hockey community. Since this year’s topic was focused around building drill libraries many practical examples were demonstrated. Craig Sherbaty and James Eccles guided two teams from South Okanagan Minor Hockey through a number of progression drills that coaches can incorporate in their own practices. Following the on-ice demo, Craig also introduced the new Mobile App produced by Hockey Canada, which is a great way to improve coaching techniques. Pasco Valana, who is in his 25th season as a goaltending coach, also hosted an on-ice session designed for goaltender improvement.
Felicia Martin then spoke at the event on behalf of Future Goals, a digital education initiative put forth by the NHL the NHLPA and the Vancouver Canucks. This initiative allows students to learn about math, science and technology in their local schools using hockey as its learning tool.
Finally, Head Coach Willie Desjardins addressed the crowd before leading the Canucks practice alongside Perry Pearn, Doug Lidster and Glen Gulutzan.
Coaches who stayed behind to watch Colorado’s optional skate got a chance to see a goaltending great practice for his upcoming alumni game against Detroit. Patrick Roy put on an old school performance showing the coaches he could still play the game if Colorado was put into a pinch.
Throughout the day many great prizes were given away including signed memorabilia, $100 to Tim Horton’s and premium Canucks tickets! Every coach also left with a resource manual and valuable coaching techniques, drill ideas, and goaltending strategies.
