by Staff Writer / Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver, B.C. - Canucks Sports & Entertainment (Canucks) and Rogers Communications Inc. (Rogers) unveiled some of the Canucks and Rogers Arena Fan Experience initiatives planned for the 2010.11 season. Canucks Sports & Entertainment, Chief Operating Officer and Alternate Governor, Victor de Bonis and Nadir Mohamed, President and Chief Executive Officer, Rogers, offered a preview of new initiatives and fan experiences set to launch on opening night for the Canucks 40th Anniversary season.

Prior to the formal announcements the day began with a ceremonial puck drop from centre-ice at Rogers Arena, where Canucks owner, Francesco Aquilini and players Roberto Luongo, Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Dan Hamhuis joined Victor de Bonis and Rogers executives Nadir Mohamed and Phil Lind.

“The 40th Anniversary season of the Vancouver Canucks is a special celebration,” said Victor de Bonis. “We want to engage Canucks fans in an interactive experience that lasts the entire season and brings them closer than ever to their team. On opening night fans will be able to connect to the Canucks in new and innovative ways at Rogers Arena inside and out.”

“Rogers is also celebrating a milestone, our 50th anniversary, and we are thrilled to ‘officially’ open Rogers Arena and celebrate all the great experiences we will be bringing fans this year,” said Nadir Mohamed, President & Chief Executive Officer, Rogers.

The Vancouver Canucks and Rogers strategic alliance is committed to providing world-class experiences to all fans and guests entering Rogers Arena. Throughout the Canucks 40th Anniversary season fans will be engaged to see, hear and experience the emotion and excitement of the game, celebrating Vancouver’s rich history of hockey. Enhancements to the fan experience have been made from the building exterior, to the concourse to in-arena game entertainment.

Lighting enhancements to the exterior of Rogers Arena will surround the entire building and project the blue and green of Vancouver’s original and current uniform colours. Eight large banners featuring Canucks players welcome fans at each of the four entrance gates. The emotive visual effect is designed to instantly connect fans as they approach Rogers Arena, offering a dramatic backdrop to the downtown Vancouver skyline.

Inside Rogers Arena, interactive concourse exhibits will connect fans with the hockey club’s storied past. The ‘Canucks Hall of Heroes’ will highlight the careers of the greatest players in team history. Located in section 316, the ‘Canucks Hall of Heroes’ will be an extension of the in-arena recognition bestowed to retired players and Ring of Honour inductees. The ‘Canucks Memories’ exhibit will be located in section 121 and will present an audio/visual account of the franchise’s history, reliving favourite Canucks memories.

Working together with Rogers, the two exhibits will be unveiled during the season honouring the history of the franchise and it’s most beloved players. The exhibits will include exclusive, authentic memorabilia and artifacts contributed from players who have worn the Canucks sweater over the past 40 years. Seven-foot, high definition touch screens will accompany each exhibit displaying many of the greatest calls, highlights and video footage in franchise history.

The in-arena game experience for fans will be enhanced with 16 additional projectors and four 40-foot scrim displays extending from the roof down to the glass. Positioned at each of the four corners of the ice surface the vivid column-like displays offer a striking canvas, weaving the stories and rich history of the team and city before every home game at Rogers Arena. Ice-level microphones strategically placed around the ice surface will pick up the sounds and speed of the game and be broadcast through a state-of-the-art sound system. From the suites to the upper and lower bowls, every fan will feel closer and more connected to the on-ice action than ever before.

The Canucks and Rogers are also proud to join forces on the new Canucks mobile app powered by Rogers. Building on the success of the Canucks top NHL iPhone app last season, the new smartphone app will be available on the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android platforms. Every feature fans enjoyed with last year’s app will continue to be complimentary. There will also be a new paid premium app that allows users in BC/Yukon to watch Sportsnet games live on their smartphone. For this season, Rogers customers will enjoy live streaming with no impact to their data usage.

In addition to being among the first few teams to offer live games, users will be able to view highlights, as well as live press conferences, select practices and events from inside Rogers Arena. The new Canucks app powered by Rogers will also include a set of in-bowl mobile fan enhancement features for spectators attending games at Rogers Arena: including an interactive stadium map and a live box score with full game stats. The new app will be available soon.
