Canucks Slect Five Players in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have selected centre Cody Hodgson, defenceman Yann Sauve, right wing Prab Rai, left wing Mats Froshaug, and goaltender Morgan Clark in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.


Cody Hodgson, 18, was a member of Brampton during the 2007-08 season where he ranked in the top 20 in OHL scoring with 85 points and led the Battalion in goals with 40 in 68 games. He also recorded five goals in five playoff games before Brampton was eliminated in the first round. The 6’0”, 185 lbs centre was named captain of team Canada who won gold at the 2008 Under-18 IIHF World Championships. He scored 12 points (2-10-12) and led all skaters in assists (10). The Haliburton, Ontario native also won a gold medal with Team Ontario at the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

Vancouver’s second pick of the Draft was Yann Sauve, selected in the 2nd round, 41st overall. Sauve, 18, was a member of Saint John in the 2007-08 season where he recorded 21 points (6-15-21) and 92 penalty minutes in 69 games played. The 6’2”, 209 lbs defenceman played in the 2008 CHL Top Prospects game, picking up one assist.

Prab Rai was selected next by Vancouver in the fifth round, 131st overall. Rai, 18, was a member of the Seattle Thunderbirds in the 2007-08 season where he recorded 65 points (20-45-65) and 21 penalty minutes in 72 games played. The 6’0”, 191 lbs right wing also played in 11 playoff games with Seattle, registering six points (2-4-6) and four penalty minutes.

With Vancouver’s sixth round pick, the Canucks selected Mats Froshaug 161st overall. Froshaug, 19, split the 2007-08 season between Linkoping of the Swedish Elite League, Nykoping of the Swedish AI League and Linkoping of the Junior Elite League. In 35 games played with the Linkoping Junior team, Froshaug recorded 36 points (18-18-36) and 41 penalty minutes. The 6’1”, 198 lbs left wing also represented Norway at the 2008 World Championships and the 2007 World Junior U20 Championships.

Morgan Clark was selected as Vancouver’s final pick of the Draft, in the 7th round, 161st overall. Clark, 18, spent the 2007-08 season with the Red Deer Rebels where he posted one shutout, a record of 10-30-3 and a 3.70 GAA. In 38 games played, Clark had a save percentage of .884.
