Canucks Report: Special teams focus

by Derek Jory / Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have passed the midway point of their seven-game road trip and if they want another win Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, it’s clear what needs to happen.

“We need to improve our specialty teams,” said Henrik Sedin, matter-of-factly. “They haven’t been good enough and it has meant that we’re trailing in games or not able to close them out properly.”

The Canucks held an optional morning skate Saturday after the Air Canada Centre and once again absent from the ice was forward Brandon Sutter, who did not play last game in Ottawa. Coach Desjardins confirmed Sutter will be out again tonight.

If Sutter’s injury is worse than originally thought, look for Hunter Shinkaruk to be recalled from the Utica Comets.

*****UPDATE***** - Hunter Shinkaruk has been recalled and has joined the Canucks in Toronto.

Despite all the one-goal losses, Dan Hamhuis doesn’t think it’s affecting the mentality of the team. Last season they got the bounces and won tight games, this year they haven’t been able to.

It’s ebb and flow, according to the defenceman.
