Canucks Report: Sept 20, 2015

by Derek Jory / Vancouver Canucks
That’s a wrap.

The Vancouver Canucks ended training camp Sunday in Prince George, and they left Northern BC with a bang.

The highlight of camp was a Team Blue vs. Team White scrimmage that played out in front of a sold out CN Centre, home of the Prince George Cougars.

After a scoreless 1st period, things opened up in the 2nd as Team White jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Hunter Shinkaruk and Alex Friesen. Team Blue replied with quick back-to-back goals courtesy of Brendan Gaunce and Mackenze Stewart leaving the game even at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Another goal from Friesen had Team White ahead 3-2 before the scrimmage turned 3-on-3 and Blair Jones potted the equalizer sending the game into a five-minute sudden death 3-on-3 overtime.

A scoreless extra session led to a shootout and although six shooters took aim, Linden Vey was the only one to score as Team White won 4-3. Shots finished even at 30-30.

Jim Benning was impressed with the level of play all camp, he told reporters post-game. He and his team are now crafting line-ups for the first four pre-season games, which begin Monday night in North Saanich against the San Jose Sharks.

Benning said youngsters like Jared McCann, Jake Virtanen and Cole Cassels will each play two of the first four games and the team will evaluate where everyone is at after that. Those who deserve to continue playing will continue playing.

UPDATE: Tate Olson, Carl Neill and Kyle Pettit have been assigned to their respective junior clubs.
