The Vancouver Canucks held their year-end media availability Monday at Rogers Arena and the consensus from the players was to be expected: they’d rather be preparing for the playoffs than speaking to the media.
“It was a disappointing season for a lot of reasons,” said Daniel Sedin. “But as a group we’re excited about what’s to come. There’s a lot of young guys ready to take on big roles. Now it’s about working hard this summer for next season, and that starts now.”
The biggest news from the nearly two-hours of press conferences, which featured up to four players at the podium at once, was World Championship updates. Five Canucks will be making the trip to Russia to compete for their countries in 24 days time. Chris Tanev and Ben Hutton for Team Canada, Jacob Markstrom for Team Sweden, Jannik Hansen for Team Denmark and Yannick Weber for Switzerland.
Other updates: Brendan Gaunce said he will return to Utica to complete for in the Calder Cup Playoffs with the Comets, whereas Chris Higgins will not; Alex Edler and Brandon Sutter are already two weeks into their summer training programs; Sven Baertschi and Radim Vrbata said they’ll be healed and ready to begin training in a few weeks.
