Canucks Report: Clearing up Cody

By Derek Jory,

Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis took a break from scouting the Young Stars Tournament Sunday to address the media on everyone’s favourite topic: Cody Hodgson.

It was determined two days ago that Hodgson would not be participating in the Young Stars Tournament because of his lingering back injury. Many things are being reported about what exactly Hodgson is going through and Gillis clarified.

“He has a bulging disc in his back and that’s been an on-going injury,” said Gillis, who added that this is the healthiest Hodgson has been for 14 months. “In addition to that we were informed by his family and his agent that he also had a slight muscle tare in his back and there’s still some tenderness around that area.”

Gillis put to rest rumours that Hodgson had been misdiagnosed with his back injury and he was adamant that the former first round draft pick won’t be rushed back into action without feeling 100 per cent and receiving all the proper medical clearance.

That wouldn’t be good for Hodgson and it wouldn’t be good for the Canucks.

“It would be unfair to put him or anyone in a situation where you’re on the ice with players that are 100 per cent and going hard and they’re not completely ready. We’re going to take our time, we’re going to let him follow the program that he’s on and when he’s ready to play, he’ll play.”

While Gillis said it is a possibility that Hodgson won’t play any pre-season games, everyone is confident that won’t be the case.

The only other topic at hand regarding Hodgson was his apparently unhealthy relationship with the Canucks. Turns out its got a clean bill of health. There’s no riff to speak of.

“I don’t know, I keep reading about one, but I talk to him all the time, Dave Gagner talks to him all the time, if there is, I don’t know about it.

“We seem to have a great relationship, he’s very enthusiastic, he feels great, he’s working towards his goal and we don’t have any problems with Cody and we don’t think he has any problems with us. I’m not quite sure how this has evolved to the point that it has, but it’s extremely disappointing because we certainly don’t feel this way and he doesn’t feel that way.”

Hodgson is scheduled to skate Monday and he will be reevaluated at that time.
