To celebrate the first time NHL playoff hockey has kicked off in August, the Vancouver Canucks surprised fans with the Penalty Box Patio to enjoy while physically distancing.

Perhaps the tiniest sports bar in the world, the Penalty Box Patio allows fans to celebrate two of Vancouverites' favourite pastimes that we have rarely been able to combine together before - NHL hockey and patio season. The first Canucks game of the qualifying round is set for August 2.

Ahead of the Canucks first game of the post season, a lucky group of diehard fans got to experience the Patio. They were greeted by the Canucks official in-arena host, treated to a complimentary selection of Budweisers and game day stadium food (featuring specialties such as "Towel Power" Hot Wings and "The '94 Save" Soft Pretzels), plus a surprise appearance by team mascot FIN.

"While fans may not be able to cheer from the stands right now, their passion and support of Canucks hockey has not wavered," said Trent Carroll, CEO, Canucks Sports & Entertainment. "In celebration of the start of hockey, the penalty box patio is a fun way for us to bring a unique hockey experience to a sunny patio for our fans who are looking to get outside and be a part of the excitement of the return of Canucks hockey."

The Penalty Box Patio adhered to consistent physical distancing and sanitization practices of other local eateries. Some examples included servers wearing custom Canucks masks, sanitizations between all seatings and pre-screening fans for Covid-19 symptoms.

Vancouver is currently in Phase 3 of its re-opening plan, meaning that restaurants are open with restricted seating. The city has issued licenses for over 80 pop-up patios, allowing residents to make the most of the summer weather safely.
