Brendan Gaunce and Mike Zalewski finished strong as the Utica Comets closed out the regular season this past weekend. Next up: Calder Cup Playoffs.


Brock Boeser announced on Twitter last week that he will be returning to North Dakota for his sophomore season.

Alex Friesen appeared in two games this past week, scoring once. He finishes the regular season with career highs in goals, points, shots and penalty minutes.

Brendan Gaunce returned to Utica this past week for the first time since February. He collected two goals and three assists for five points in three contests, along with 15 shots on goal. Gaunce scored the overtime winner on Saturday. He finishes first among active Comets with 17 goals on the season, as well as first in points-per-game at .83.

Alex Grenier entered the week with 28 points in his last 25 games, but was held to just one assist in three games to close out the season. He finishes the regular season as the Comets’ leader in points and assists, setting new career highs in both categories.

Joseph Labate tallied the game winner in Friday’s win over Syracuse, his 10th goal of the season. He has four goals in his past eight games, two of which were game-winners.

Jordan Subban registered one assist in his final three regular season games this past weekend. April was his worst month statistically during the season with just two assists in eight games.

Mike Zalewski appears to be in playoff form after collecting two goals and a helper in Saturday’s win over Syracuse. He has four points in his last four games and six points in his past eight contests heading into the post-season. Zalewski was named the Comets’ Most Improved Player on Sunday as he went from 12 points last season to 33 this year.
