by Tyson Giuriato / Vancouver Canucks

Jake Virtanen has found his stride and Cole Cassels remains red-hot in the OHL, while Alex Friesen has picked up where he left off last season for the Comets. A weekly look at some of the top Canucks prospects.

Darren Archibald had a quiet week and has now gone six games without a point, but is still playing with energy and is a physical force on the ice.

Cole Cassels had just another week at the office: seven points in two-and-a-half games (was tossed on Sunday for a hit to the head midway through the second period). He sits sixth in OHL scoring and fourth in penalty-minutes. World Juniors anyone?

Alex Friesen returned to the Comets lineup and picked up where he left off last season with four points in three games. Needs to play with confidence and a chip on his shoulder to be effective, which he has been doing. Friesen is blossoming into a really good prospect for the Canucks.

Brendan Gaunce failed to hit the scoresheet this weekend, but is still playing well in his own zone along with line-mates Carter Bancks and Wacey Hamilton. Was only on the ice for one of 11 goals against in three games.

Alex Grenier picked up a goal and assist this past week. He appears a step quicker this season and isn’t afraid to go to the dirty areas. Three of his five goals have come on the man-advantage.

Nicklas Jensen had two goals and a helper for the Comets this past week. The Comets’ most dangerous player has had a good month in the AHL, collecting four goals and six points in five games. His line with Friesen and Ronalds Kenins was very good at times on Saturday.

Jacob Markstrom got one start this past week, and it was one to forget, allowing six goals on 32 shots. It was the first regulation loss of the season for him and only the third time in nine games he has allowed three or more goals.

Jared McCann hasn’t hit his stride since returning from an illness, with only two points in his last four games centering the Greyhounds second line. Once he gets his timing and conditioning back on track, expect big numbers.

Jordan Subban went 13 games in a row picking up at least a point, but then went three in a row without. He ended that skid with his 12th goal of the season on Sunday, which leads all defencemen in Canadian Major Junior.

Jake Virtanen is starting to find his groove, picking up six points in three games last week. His line (with Adam Tambellini and Kenton Helgesen) have been dominant for the Hitmen. Remember all that talk about his lack of assists last season? He has 11 in 14 games so far this season.
