Canucks Captain enjoys a Blizzard at the Beach

by Staff Writer / Vancouver Canucks

If Dairy Queen Blizzards are one of your favorite things, the Oncology Playroom of the Children’s Hospital was the place to be. Director of the Child Life Department, Diane Hart, and her staff held an Oreo Blizzard Beach party for staff, parents and kids who were on the hospital campus grounds that day.  Visiting guests received a special surprise to see Orland Kurtenbach, the Canucks first franchise Captain and Ring of Honour recipient signing autographs and sharing blizzards with kids and parents alike. Even Sunny the bear was on hand to enjoy his share of Oreo Blizzards.  Tony Lourenco, a local Dairy Queen store owner, was present to provide the treats and help with the distribution of cold, delicious Blizzards. Needless to say the blizzards were swirling fast and furiously.

Tony’s daughter, Lindsey, was an oncology patient at the Children’s Hospital and she was the 2012 Miracle Weekend champion child.  To learn more about her story click here. The party built excitement among patients in the hospital leading up to the Miracle Treat Day, which was held yesterday, proceeds of $1 or more* from every Blizzard® Treat purchased at participating DQ® stores was donated to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.  For more information on the Miracle Treat Day click here.

A special thanks to Diane Hart and her staff, Denise Zunker, Philanthropy Officer of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and the other Child Life staff members who were on hand to help make the day a success for everyone involved.
