A burning blaze is no match for the firefighters of New Westminster, but how will they fare on ice? On November 19th, the Vancouver Canucks Alumni will challenge the New Westminster Firefighters to a charitable hockey game. The game will mark the 6th bi-annual matchup between the two teams, hosted by the New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society.
The Alumni vs. Firefighters hockey game is a family friendly event that raises money for local New Westminster charities and groups in the Lower Mainland. Interest in the event continues to grow ever year. In 2006 the event raised almost $15,000, and in 2008 close to 3000 people attended the game at Queen’s Park Arena. The alumni and firefighters hope to exceed those numbers and expect a sold out crowd of 4200 this year. The event features fun for all ages, including an outdoor BBQ, Jazz Band, Frisbee toss game, raffle, and door prizes.
Canucks alumni who have previously played in the event include Bill Ranford, Cliff Ronning, Jyrki Lumme, and Richard Brodeur. The alumni and firefighters will battle it out to claim the Hydrant Cup, though the real winners will be the fans who get to cheer on their favourite Canuck and local heroes.
